nrps, 9 January, 2014 at 12:19 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi -

Hoping to hear from anyone that was married or has attended a wedding at the three venues on our shortlist:

Vermont Hotel, Newcastle

Great North Museum : Hancock, Newcastle

Grand Hotel, Tynemouth

Alternative suggestions also welcome!

Thanks !

I'm sorry I haven't attended weddings at these places but I am also looking at venues in the same area. I have a recent thread on the organisation, or lack of, of a venue (you can read the post for more details). I haven't mentioned it in any posts but it is in fact the Hancock Museum. Can I ask if you have this on your shortlist after going to see it or was this just through internet research? If you have seen it can I ask why you chose to shortlist it and in particular what was the wedding co-ordinator like as she's ignoring my calls!

    Hi -

The Hancock is on our shortlist purely because it looks fun and different.

We're going at the weekend to have a look around - i'm not a northerner so have never been (!) .

Happy to let you know how we got on, next week.

I'm a Newcastle bride. I haven't been to a wedding at any of those venues though so I'm of no help. We are getting married at As You Like It in Jesmond. There are many beautiful venues up here xx

    Hi

I am getting married at As You Like It Jesmond, however The Grand was our second choice but it came down to cost. The Grand is an amazing venue and part of me is gutted we're not getting married there (even though I love our venue) the views are amazing! We went to look around the Vermont and it wasn't for us, not sure if you've looked at it yet but we found it a bit dated. We didn't look at The Hancock although I imagine that is an amazing venue!

good luck with your search, let us know where you choose! Xx

Not until 11th October. Have you had emails from the new wedding coordinator? You'll have to flash some pics after your wedding!

I agree that the Vermont is quite old fashioned but I think that's part of its style, their brochures have a big emphasis on 1920s/Gatsby glamour. Apart from the Hancock, we have been more interested in modern venues. We have been in touch with a member of staff from Baltic, we have a really good feeling that this might be our venue and really excited to go and see it hopefully some time soon. We also want to see the Sage.

NRPS- did you see the Hancock? What did you think?

Righty... we had appointments at all three this weekend.

The Hancock was an interesting place, probably more suitable for those with a significant budget and the time/energy/creativity to make it into what they want. It's very much a blank-canvas type venue and without the right touch could feel soul-less/corporate.

The Orchid Suite at the Grand Hotel in Tynemouth (currently being re-decorated) has lovely views out across Tynemouth Longsands, but we just didn't get the right vibe there. It felt rather... ordinary.

We felt the Vermont was head and shoulders above both of these. A beautiful place, in the process of a sympathetic renovation that seems to be reflecting the history of the building. Touches such as the leaded windows in the ballroom reflecting the heritage of the city are wonderful. And the SkyLounge is the perfect setting to show off Newcastle !

I am now feeling I was robbed when we were shown the Vermont lol! We were shown 1 room which was more of a function suite. Perfectly nice just not for us. Is there more than 1 room?

I know what you mean about the grand we just loved the views and the fact you were in 3 different rooms across the day.

Hope you've found your venue! We searched for ages! Xx

Oh and yes Dollydimple I've been emailing the new wedding coordinator. We've just booked in for our 6 month meeting and menu tasting night!

Just one more question (sorry don't mean to hijack the thread!) are you having a band or a DJ? If so are you using the DJ from AYLI? We're currently trying to decide xx

I just emailed her last week about the DJ! We were undecided between the two but I was getting two stressed out trying to find someone so think we are just going with their recommended one. I think they get them through AMV live who seem to be the company who do the music at the fayres. I figure they just know the place so why not? When are you sending invites etc? I'm excited to see the new menu options! Don't think we are having our taster until April so let me know how it goes! Didn't think id find a venue twin. It's great lol
