Venue wanting more money - after our Wedding. Advise needed please.

Butterflycake, 26 October, 2011 at 11:02 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi, we got married on Friday amd had the most perfect day. The venue were amazing and everything was fab! The morning after both myself and my husband saw the wedding planner indivudally as we were loading up the car, having breakfast etc. She asked us if everything had been ok etc.
Later on that morning I checked my email and she had emailed me at 9.30am (we had both seen her after this) saying that some VAT had been missed off our final bill.

When we received our final bill - myself and my husband went through everything. We actually saw some things missing - so I contacted her and she altered it, we then double checked it and I paid the final bill about 3 weeks before.

Obviously we are not happy that she is saying we still owe money. My husband emailed her and asked her what exactly she meant and to give further detail. She has replied today saying saying the balance was more than we had paid (by about £130 ) and "for some reason this did not show on the final invoice".

So the question is where do we stand. We have literally saved and saved for this wedding and now have nothing left AND I dont see why we should pay as it is completely their error.

Just wanted to get some advice before we reply.

Thanks everyone

Is there a VAT figure on your final invoice? Find out the current rate (20% at the moment?) and work out how much that would be, according to the services you paid for. It sounds like, maybe, they've charged you VAT at 17.5% (the rate from 2010) and realised their error. This leads to complications about whether your contract said you would pay VAT at the prevailing rate at the time of booking or at the time of the event.

But I think you need to try to work out yourself where the error is coming in. If you've chucked them £10k, I should imagine they'd forgo the £130, if pressed, If you only paid them £1k, it's obviously a bigger chunk of their income from you and they might be less likely to waive it.

I wouldn't pay anything until I knew exactly what had happened.

Thanks. We paid VAT at 20% as we paid after the VAT increase. I have a feeling they have not put VAT on the "additonal" guests we wanted up and above the package we had. The wedding cost us five and a half grand so was not a cheap one and too be honest I am quite surprised they are pushing for £130. I imagine the wedding planner is trying to sort out her error before a Manager finds out. . Thanks for advise though.

So you paid £5K (ish) including VAT at 20%. You then added some guests and have apparently only paid for their upfront costs, not the VAT associated with those costs?

Sounds like you might be liable for the charge. That doesn't necessarily mean you have to pay it though! I'd think that, given their error and given the *relatively* small amount of money, They might be convinced to forgo it.

    Did you pay a gratuity?

If you have all the changes in writing and copies of the bills at all stages I would argue it. Her mistake so she should take responsibility for it.
