Very small, simple wedding advice

Sue_69, 11 October, 2015 at 12:29 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hi there,

My first post, so here goes :-)

My Fiance and I are wanting a very small, simple wedding. It's 2nd time around for both of us - we are both 46 and both widowed. We have 3 boys between us. We feel very fortunate that we have found each other after all the sadness of the past.

We are opting for a Registry Office and then Afternoon Tea over the road in our favourite restaurant.

I really don't want us to get carried away and spend loads of money, want to keep it reasonable and very simple - how do we do this?

What should my Fiance and all the boys wear - I'd like them to match but don't want to spend the earth? What should I wear? I didn't have a proper wedding dress the first time round so feel guilty if I want one this time....but looking at simple summery dresses I just can't decide....

I want it to be easy and straight forward and for us all to have a nice day.....there will be 17 of us in total as we're inviting immediate family and that's it.

Thanks for any help and advice.

There are lots of beautiful wedding dresses out there and not all of them are in bridal shops, some places like monsoon or phase 8 do beauties. Some are simple. Don't rule out a wedding dress until you've had a good look as some are gorgeous yet not what you would imagine when you think wedding dress. You could even decide you want a tea length dress. There was a post on here recently with everyone flashing a picture of their dress and it may give you some ideas.

Can any reader post the link? I can't do it on my phone.

Basically you can have whatever you want and for the men also. If you want more casual look at destination wedding pictures. Pinterest is always a good starting point for ideas.

Congratulations and welcome by the way. Look forward to hearing your thoughts and plans. X

Your wedding sounds lovely! In terms of your dress, anything goes these days. A pretty tea-length dress would probably be ideal for you. Though plenty of brides with smaller weddings opt for a full length dress - you decide!

It may be cheaper and easier to go for suit hire for the men/boys. Less stressful than dragging everyone around trying to buy new stuff to match.

    What area are you in?

It's both our second marriages too and we're also keeping things small and intimate. I've opted for a Dessy Bridesmaid dress instead of a full on wedding dress but if you want one then I say go for it!

I photographed a couple-only ceremony at York register office. If you'd like to see some photos just get in touch.

We are having us two plus two witnesses. H2b is wearing a suit, I'm wearing a wedding dress, we are having flowers and a photographer. Followed by a restaurant meal. You can have whatever you want because it's your day. Wear whatever takes your fancy.

It sounds like it'll be a lovely day - I toyed with afternoon tea so it's definitely a winner!

I was quite surprised by the pretty dresses sold in BHS for weddings - they only come in at around £150. You could also try some wedding outlet stores. I went to Wed 2 B in Bolton and got a tea length dress for a good price.

The suits could be hired? You might even get a discount hiring more than one. Or you could just hire nice matching suit jackets - most men have a nice white shirt and black trousers. My H2B is thinking of doing this.

Thank you for all your replies.

What do you all think to this dress? - I've decided I don't want a full on wedding dress and wondering if something along these lines might be what I'm looking for.

As for the blokes, we're going to go for the 3 boys in navy trousers, white shirt and tie. My H2B is going to go for the same but with a waistcoat and maybe a slighter different shade.

    Thanks again :-)

That's a really pretty dress. Could you still have some flowers? I've booked a photographer for just one hour through the service and to get some nice pics after then four of us are going for a meal.

Thanks Jayne. I think I would have a small posy of flowers, something quite simple though. I really like the dress, am so tempted to order it now!

Not sure on a photographer yet, I guess if we could get one for just an hour or so that might be a plan....otherwise my Dad is quite nifty with a camera!

    Hi.

The dress is so pretty and it will look great next to the navy trousers that your husband will be wearing.

We are also having a small-ish wedding followed by some food at our favourite restaurant so I can't wait to see your pictures. ?

That sounds brilliant and cost efficient.

We were 19 in total, so I let everyone know the colours as everyone was technically part of the 'bridal' party, and like you, only close family were there. I did it that way so everyone felt involved.

I'm sorry that you've both lost loved ones, and wish you a wonderful future together with your boys.

Do it your way - there are no rules. If it works for you, it works.
