Videographer

Lily70, 25 January, 2013 at 08:42 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi

Im planning to have my wedding videod, I've been sent a couple of sample DVDs, a couple of them I really like.

my question is, if you have booked, or planning to book a video did you meet the person who would be filming first or just book cause you liked the sample or had recommendation. I was just going to book but my friend suggested meeting first?

What did you do?

    Hiya,

We have booked a videographer for our wedding in August and although I'd seen some of his sample videos of other weddings on his website, when we contacted him he suggested it would be good to meet us and he could show us some more clips and answer any questions we had.

We found this really helpful and also liked the fact he came round to our house armed with lots of short and long clips to see, even including some at the venues we are getting married at which were nice to see.

It was also really good to meet him in person to get an idea what he was like and make sure we got on too, as we met with one other possible choice who wasn't really our kind of person when we met him and I think I'd have felt uncomfortbale having him around filming when I was getting read etc on the day!

    Hope this helps!

    Love Laura x

We just booked ours based on their work. They didn't really have much to do with us on the day so I'm not sure a meeting would have been beneficial, plus they were based about 3 hours away from us. x

    Hiya,

I'm currently launching my own videography company and have given this some thought myself.

Although I agree that it's not essential to meet with a videographer beforehand if you have seen their work and are happy with it, but by meeting with the VOG first, you can get a good sense of the type of person she/he is and whether you get on with them and are comfortable having them floating around on your big day, as I believe a VOG should ideally not be seen or heard, but be discreetly capturing special moments.

    Hope this helps!

A videographer is different to a photographer. With a photographer, there will be a lot of interaction, they'll be there with you directing you all day, so it's mega mega important that you get along and have rapport.

A videographer will be there all day, but you shouldn't be aware of them at all! They should be silently capturing the day, hopefully without you ever really being aware of them!

However, I don't think I'd book anything without meeting the person first.

So, in summary, it's not necessary, but I personally wouldn't..

    Pete x

P.S: I realise this may well have made you more confused than before, for this, I apologise.

    This.

We had an array of sample discs from various VOGs (one we got sent didn't even work, big fail!) but we decided on ours due to the quality of work. We had been recommended someone however when looking at their work, their sample disc included some work several years old and you could really tell the difference between the years and technical bits so we actually decided against them as our now VOG, the quality was consistent.

Worth meeting them if you can before booking. You want to find out a) that they're not too busy to give you some time, if they're like "oh sorry I'm too busy doing weddings", it'd kind of make you wonder if they'd be too busy to edit your video. B) It's worth seeing how they present themselves. I've seen some suppliers turn up really scruffy looking, it's not professional and you want to gauge that they care and are amenable on the day (and not going to just drink your champers etc.)

I once worked for a couple who booked their video guys based on a disc only and the guys who turned up were arrogant burks to everyone.

If you can't meet them, look for comments or experiences about them as a person as well as professionally.
