Videographer - yay or nay - new brides n OMs advice please!

TreacleTart, 4 June, 2014 at 20:40 Posted on Planning 0 22

Hi all, apologies if this has been discussed before, I will have a trawl through old posts too, but just wondered what opinions people have on videographers? I would never have said I wanted one (thoughts of cheesey videos hours long put me right off) n a few months ago I saw a super 8 filmed video (think vintage style, slightly grainy, no sound, set to music) n I fell in love with it...i love that style of filming, I think it's emotive and beautiful n just yum! So I showed OH who wasn't fussed haha. He wasn't too keen on the style, n didn't think we'd ever watch it, so I pondered n thought oh he's probably right so (kind of) forgot about it...

until a few days ago when looking at a blog I see another super 8 wedding video n fell in love all over again. So I emailed a couple of guys, ones already got back to me with a price n what's included etc n yes it's expensive but they're just so lovely! I genuinely think I'd watch it (I also think he would) so I showed OH the email n batted my lashes n he said we can have a think n if I want one then yes - yay!

My reasons for wanting one are that they're beautiful (did I say that three thousand times already), we've got a great photographer already but this will give even more images of the day, it will capture the little looks and moves, and, apologies if slightly morbid, I'm not, but I also think it would be special to have our parents especially, captured on film so many years from now we can watch them smiling n waving in a way that you don't get on photos.

The negatives are the cost, n OH made the point that potentially that would be four people capturing the day (photographer n assistant, and videographer and assistant) were not having a huge wedding (hopefully 50-70 people) so is it daft to have a load of people milling around photoing n videoing...though reviews and reports all saythat they should be unobtrusive, n we shouldn't know they're there, and well WOULD we watch it? N if you've had one done, have your husbands watched n enjoyed it?

Any other points/opinions?

thanks x

I too considered a VOG for many weeks, going back and forth, asking married friends their thoughts... and finally, Saturday last week we booked one. She is a friend of our TOG and gave us a very nice discount and total price for the full day is £395.00... booked and paid! Smiley smile

I would say absolutely do it, if you have the funds to do so, all our married friends, including the husbands all watched the DVD and said how much they enjoyed watching it and seeing things that they missed, like the guests having fun, seeing the reaction on grooms face as he sees his wife to be walking down the aisle etc etc...

It's something I really wanted. I know I'm not going to watch it all the time but nice to look back on. We have asked one of our wedding guests to film it which he has agreed to. I know it's a big job but as long as we get the ceremony, speeches and first dance filmed we are happy, anything else is a bonus! The guest is good at putting DVDs etc together so i know he will do a good job! If you can afford it I would say yes! Or consider asking a guest who you trust to help out.

A couple of my friends do super 8 and I love it. If you have the budget for it then go for it. I had a wedding video and I have enjoyed watching it again.

We have booked premier wedding videos and they have charged £495+vat which was one of the cheapest quotes we had. They are based the other side of London but are travelling to Suffolk for our wedding only charging £18 travel expenses. Another company in Essex which are reasonably priced are Modello Media which quoted me too late as I had already booked premier but were £150 cheaper!

They are, the one we've had a quote for is pushing £1800...it does include a short video, longer video of about 15 minutes, n a book a photos/video stills, n travel up from London (from Belgium really but they only charge travel expenses from London)...but I watch the videos of these people I don't know n just think wow, I'm in love! I need to find out if that includes anything at all with sound on...I'm thinking might be nice for speeches....

Hi DaffodilWaves, I think that's the general consensus isn't it, if we can budget for it then do it...just have to completely convince OH that it's the best idea I've ever had again haha! Do you have any recommendations you can give?

In my opinion, Shutterbox films are masters at it.

The only thing we've considered is Marryoke, but only because it'd be quite funny to see Auntie Mavis rap to Eminem.... even then it's a massive maybe depending on cost.

The way I see it, people are sent a DVD of a wedding and they'll either never watch it, watch 5 mins or use it as a coaster. I went to a lovely wedding in Spain a few years ago and they sent us the DVD - I'm ashamed to say I've never opened the case. ?

I think it really depends on how important it is to you. For me, I wanted to spend money on the things that would last forever. I couldn't justify spending £500 on flowers that would last one day but not spend on a good VOG/TOG who produce memories that will last forever!

My VOG is LoveGetsSweeter and she is definitely worth a look. She's been featured in a lot of magazines and her work is really beautiful.

Oh I don't know about this - I'm so torn. I see some lovely videos and think "Oh that would be nice", but OH isn't keen, and having just (yesterday evening) had an offer accepted on a new house, budget has suddenly become a massive issue - thank goodness most of the final amounts aren't due for months. My parents have a sound only recording of their wedding, which they played on their 25th wedding anniversary, but that was just the ceremony.

Oh, um, aah, might have to find some money down the back of the sofa...

I'm in exactly the same boat.....very unsure. Plus my OH thinks it's a waste of money / a bit cheesy (and one half of me agrees with him). Anyway, I've pushed for one and we're doing it, the main reason being my BM who I love and trust completely said the one thing she regrets from her wedding is that she didn't have a vog - especially for ceremony and speeches....so that sold it to me! They are so expensive though - I feel guilty spending all that money!!!

Charlene was our videographer last month and we absolutely love our highlights film!!...great choice Smiley winking

Our feature film is due in a couple of weeks and I cannot wait!! I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a VOG as she is brilliant.

I wouldn't worry about having too many photographers/videographers. We had 2 of each and 85 guests. We didn't notice them, they were great. Really unobtrusive. And I've watched our highlights film loads since we got it. I'm so glad we booked a videographer!!

I am getting asked all the time if I do video so this weekends weddings I have permission from the couples to video the ceremony and speeches but it wont be like a professional videographer does, this is just video from one spot at the ceremony then the reception for the speeches left to run while I carry on with photographing.

I think a VOG is a really nice idea, and if I had all of the money in the world I would probably hire one...

As it stands though, having seen a few wedding videos, I just personally think 'meh', it's not really for us. We would prefer some very striking arty farty images from our TOG. I guess it's like a pp said, we would hardly ever watch the video, whereas a picture on wall is unavoidable and (I would hope) be nice to look at, and just constantly 'there'. A video is never constantly 'there' and i know that it would be put in the DVD rack, rarely to emerge...

If you feel you would enjoy watching it now and again, and feel that it is a very important part of collecting memories for the day, then I say go for it! Some people like to look back on their memories in 'real time', others prefer using images, especially ones that can leave room for interpretation and wonder Smiley smile
