videographer - y/n?

lyni, 9 July, 2008 at 10:58 Posted on Planning 0 19

This really isn't something we have thought about at all, but having seen the wedding video thread I think we might regret not having one.

Is everyone else having one? I think we might have left it too late, with hardly any money spare!! x

We weren't going to but a friend runs a videographer business and offered. We turned it down as we both hate being on film. Reconsidered as none of our grandparents can come (too far to travel) so thought it would be nice for them, but the actual ceremony isn't allowed to be recorded anyway (not sure if this is just our registrar or a general thing) so are currently undecided!!

Sorry but firstly I have to laugh at the mistake in the title ?

Now to answer your question, yes we are having one, I wasn't keen on the idea at first but having spoken to a few people who regretted not having one we decided it might be a good idea. Also, we've never owned a video camera in our family so there is no real moving record of what people look and sound like and I don't want it to get to the point where it's too late. Sorry if that's a bit morbid.

We really want one, but would only have it for the ceremony and the speeches, not too bothered about filming the evening do as there will be lots of pics anyway and that will just make it more expensive. I think it will come down to an issue of money with us anyway, as I'm sure if we really can't afford it H2b's grandad will be happy to do it with his digital camera or something so we at least have some sort of video! Preferably though we want to have one.

I think ours is around the £1300 mark but I have no idea what the going rate is. I'm sure one of the video HIBs will be along soon to help you out.

We both hate being on film/ in photos but really wanted a reminder of the day. I got a half price deal so paid less than £500 in the end and I am soooo glad we did, we like it better than the photos.

We like our video better than the photos too. We weren't going to bother but then thought if we don't like it we can bin it but if we don't have one done we might regret it afterwards.

The video turned out a lot better than we thought. Our videographer put all sorts of cheesy music on it and we have a special 'pre-wedding' bit at the beginning which is absolutely hilarious. We're really glad to have had it done.

I initially didn't want one but have come around to it after talking to people who have had them and realise we might miss a lot if we don't... I was surprised how expensive it is though... lowest quote we got for the absolute basics was £850

Like photography, video coverage prices vary depending on the quality of equipment, experience of the video team and the style of production.

Anyone who's seen an embarassing, poor example wouldn't want one, but anyone seeing the really good quality that is available, it is, like great photography, seen as essential.

Professional coverage won't show you in cringe making scenes. These will (if there are any) be edited out, but still keep the continuity of the day.

Anyone seeking coverage is always advised to see clips from a variety of complete wedding day DVDs and not just highlight clips.

A hitcher who booked after viewing only a 'best bits' showreel, is very, very disappointed in her final DVD and still in negotiations to recover something watchable.

Hmm I doubt we'll have one - I find them really rather weird after a few years when people in it have passed away - there a bit too "real" and a bit emotional. Sorry if this sounds odd!

We debated this as well, but after watching other peoples on here, it changed my mind, it really sums up the day, more than photos can, and gives an insight into things you wouldnt normally see, like H2B can get to see your preps and you get to see what he was like when he arrived etc. but also the one we have booked, gets people to an area and they can leave msgs for you which I think is really cool.

We have booked the one that Mrs Woozle had, and the price is fantastic for the Video alone or with photos as well just for 850. Let me know if you want their contact details.

My advice is to find a way to have both, (I do appreciate the cost) although err towards specialists in each field. Video and still photography at weddings are different things, each has its own craft.
