Videography? What are your thoughts?

katnag, 7 April, 2011 at 09:53 Posted on Planning 0 68

Hi All

I am trying to decide on whether we need to hire someone to video our Wedding. I am really worried about missing all the details, as the day is surely going to fly by. My Fiance is not at all keen and I am not sure how to convince him. Quite a few of the companies I have spoken to film discreetly. As I was concerned about being conscious of the camera.

What have you decided to do and why?

Thanks

Kate

I am also trying to decide whether to have one or not. I have been told by a lot of people that they are pleased that they had one, or they regretted not having one. My OH wants one, but im unsure. I wouldnt know what i would want them to film other then the ceremony.

    Hi Lianne

They film the guests arriving, ceremony, speeches, cutting the cake, first dance. They can also edit it into a 5 minute highlights clip, which is quite nice. They all have different styles. Have you researched any at all? The costs (i found) range between £500 - £1000+ When is your wedding?

    Hi there,

We have decided againt a videography as TBH it's something that I don't think we will ever watch. We are deffo having a TOG though.

The only thing I am going to do though is ask my Uncle to video the speeches as another friend of mine said that was her biggest regret as the next day she had forgotten what peps had said ☹️

At my friends wedding a few years ago they had one and we are having the same company and package - they have 2 people filming, 1 at my house while I get ready and one with the groom so that you get to see what he got up to before the wedding!! They then film the people arrive, the ceremony, the speeches, cutting the cake and first dance plus some casual shots etc. They set up a camera in a room at the venue so people could go and do a 'video message' and they were soooo funny to watch back as most people were slightly hammered by this point!! I found watching the film back that they had done a great job and caught moments that you wouldn't want to miss - I was a bridesmaid at this particular wedding and didn't really notice them being there TBH! They also provided a still shot photo album for them after the wedding so they had extra photos. This is costing just under £1000 which is expensive but I want to be able to remember my day and watch it back for years to come with children etc.

    Hello,

We have decided not to have a video person as it's something we don't feel would ever be watched. What I have done though is ask my Uncle to video the speeches as that would deffo be something we can look back on again and laugh about x

    Hi kate,

I have had one recommeneded to me which was about £800 for the full day. Like what others have said, I'm not convinced its something we will watch, but it would be a nice reminder of the day as well as pictures, it just seems a lot of money for something im not 100% sold on. My wedding is 22nd September 2012. When is yours?

I wasnt keen on one ( I hate my voice when its played back to me) but my mum convinced me lol. I believe it will capture loads of moments that I otherwise wouldnt see and will be a wonderful momento of the day. IE it will show people entering the church before I arrive, me& my dad entering the church (where i will gret my bulbs out profusely!) it will show our line up, speeches, first 3 dances etc.

Hes also filming me gettin ready at my folks house etc.

he was recommended to us by a few people who very kindly lent us their dvds to view before booking so I would suggest you do that before booking anyone.

Mine is 23rd July this year. I found one with a basic package for £495. We've spent loads on everything else so need to do it on a budget.

We're having one but more for the benefit of friends and family that for whatever reason can't be there.

It's someone from work doing it so all we have to do is buy a box of tapes really, and feed them on the day. I'll be spending the hours editing it down and making a DVD out of it.

Obviously budget plays a part, although as a tog, I believe that the video offers an alternative dimension to the memory of your day.

If you do go for one, check how they record sound, specifically the vows and speeches. Some simply use the onboard microphone on the camera which simply isn't good enough. Sound quality on video is paramount in delivering the best experience of videography.

We're having one. I wasn't all that keen at first, but I don't have to watch it until I feel comfortable watching it. And it will be lovely to see the guests arriving, see how nervous the Mr is looking before I get there! However, it is an expense, and if we'd had to make cuts anywhere, I think it would have been one of the first things to go.

I wasn't keen on having one at first, thought it was definitely an area to keep the budget down...that was until my sister got married and I saw her DVD. It was amazing, such good quality and professional (not really cringeworthy e.t.c. as i had imagined) After watching it, my fiance and I both agreed we would regret it so much if we didn't get one. There were so many things my sister said she had forgotten or hadn't seen at all until she watched her DVD, we laughed and cried and it is just so nice to keep. On a bit of a morbid note, it's nice for memories when some of the older family members etc are no longer here.

When is your Wedding and where? Which company are you using (if you don't mind me asking)?

    Thanks

Hi Kate. I'm getting married in October 2011 in Merseyside. We're using Cedar Videography. Think they cover nationwide but based in the North West. Since my sister's wedding, a few other poeple who saw the DVD booked them as well! Hope this helps!

Wow, just had a quick look at their website, amazing clips! They've made it look like a film but not cheesy. There are some that are too cheesy, I prefer a more natural style. Unfortunately I am in Hampshire, but think I have found a company that are good.

Good luck with it! You will have an amazing day! x

I wasn't going to have one, then I saw a lovely video flashed on hitched and decided to go for it.

As many OM's have said the day goes so quickly and I want to be able to sit back and see parts of the day I may have missed and reminisce over the other parts. I am looking forward to the pictures but they don't capture the actual atmosphere in the same way as a film of the day IMO.

We're having a VOG, mainly because OH's mum lives abroad and cannot attend the wedding. We decided a professional would be preferable to a guest with a handycam as this would also put pressure on said guest and if they are not used to using a videocamera we could end up with footage of the ceiling or people's feet, plus the sound quality on a professional videocamera would be better than a consumer model.

KBS my OH wasn't keen either so I booked it without telling him. The VOG suggested it was a good idea to let him know as he may refuse to be filmed on the day so I had to tell him. He took it quite well as I explained how discreet they were and he wouldn't know they were there ?

I had one and it was the best thing we spent our money on. We have watched the video so many times and loved watching it every time. It really captured the day and we got to see the day from other people's view points. Well worth gettign one.

I couldn't tell you when I saw him filming at all as I didn't notice him. None of my guests did either. I have been to a couple of weddings where they have had a videographer and I didn't notice him at all.

If you can afford it then I'd go for it - you can't change your mind once it's over. My friend had one at her wedding and they get the video out everytime anyone goes round!!! It's funny to watch the speeches again, and they had a n Elvis impersonator in the evening who is so funny

The VOG also set up a camera in a little quieter area for people to record video messages and these are some of the best bits. I think I'll ask my friend to film the big moments for us - before ceremony, me coming in, ceremony, speeches etc. It'll be so lovely to be able to watch it back

I don't know if the few I met at the wedding fayre were rubbish or if I'm just really not keen on the idea (perhaps a combination) but its not something I would do. My Dad, OH's Unc and my Gramps are all planning on bringing their video cameras and with everything being electronic these days (and OH's Uncle being a bit of a whizz on the old computer) we thought we might be able to get something put together.

Please please please get one!!!! I was very anti video and changed my mind at the last minute. It cost us £250... I will cherish it forever and was far better than any photos that we got. We spent 4 times this amount on our photos.

You will not even notice that they are there. My only regret was that we never had him for the entire day.

You will see things after the event that you never noticed on the day or that you forgot.

It is a must for any bride!!!!

I had one all day for £750. He was the loveliest guy ever and I barely noticed him throughout the day.

I checked out the sound thing as some of the samples I got sounded awful but our VOG had the groom microphoned up during the ceremony and microphones on the table for the speeches.

I would definitely have regretted it if I had not done it, even though I have not seen the finished piece yet I cannot wait! The day is already such a blur...

It all depends on the style of film your looking for, i have seen some cringeworthy ones and some that are cinematic (like we try to be) Its important you know what your getting, the style of film says alot about you. Do you want your film to be cinematic or do you want it in a more regional tv style?

I would always say 2 camera persons are important as its not worth it as there is not much cutting. Have a look at our website if your intrested at www.IgniteVideo.co.uk and compare our style to others and see what type of film you like.

Always watch a montage as thats always the best clips from the day, your know how good the work is then!
