Vintage style table dec ideas needed!

mitzi-eloise, 11 August, 2010 at 20:31 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hey, i'm getting married next september in a gorgeous venue; The Grange Hotel in Thurston, Suffolk. Luckily my mum is the wedding planner there, so im getting alot of help, but there is one thing we'r stuck on- table centrepiece ideas. I was goin to have different vintage cake stands on each table with a small floral desplay in each one, but after planning a wedding last week my mum said the tables just looked empty and as the ceilings are so high I really need some height-any ideas?

I've looked at jugs of flowers, candles, bird cages ect, looking for something vintage but glamourous!

Hi, Im planning on having vintage styly table centres but all very eclectic so that no 2 tables are the same.

Ive found that using 'shabby chic' in my seaches helps and id recommend dotcomgiftshop.com (recomended to me by another hitcher) they have some lovely items on, ive bought some candle sticks and a gorgeous vintage style glass bowl which im really pleased with. no doubt i'll be ordering more from there!

I did a wedding report from a guest's point of view a couple of weeks ago. Theme was country country/shabby chic vintage with birdcages, jugs, bunting etc.

Lots of photos. Hope it gives you some ideas https://www.hitched.co.uk/Chat/forums/p/180295/1792894.aspx#1792894

I am also having a vintage style wedding and so far my ideas are:

    - Vintage birdcages decorated with flowers / lights

    - Martini glasses filled with flowers, glass stones or even sweets.

    - If you went for 1920s vintage you could always have something tall with huge feathers

    xx

I had vintage triple cake stands with cupcakes on, which doubled as dessert, and I added interest with small glasses filled with flowers and tealights, and table runners which I made.

Personally I wouldn't go too high as it makes it tricky for people to talk to each other - I kept mine low for this reason and everyone loved them.

You can see a picture here:

I still have all the cakestands (including two art deco, single silver chrome cake stands with dolphin pedestals) and glasses if you're interested, as well as the burgundy napkins, plus I make the tags, table runners and favours if you're interested in anything.

Forgot to add, I also used vintage silver/chrome candlesticks - a pair on each table - and I still have these, as well as a pair of candelabras from the top table.

Like VintageBride2B said, becareful to not block people from being able to see each other across the table, as well blocking the photographer from being able to take candids and reaction shots during the speeches. One of my pet peeves for centerpieces is when they obscure the view of guests. The martini glasses seem to always look amazing, and don't block people from being able to converse. Also vintagey table lanterns with candles in them are lovely as well. You can get nice ones and decorate around them with tealights or flowers, etc.

Hurricane lanterns are a lovely idea: I saw these after I'd bought my table decorations and loved them:

They also do matching jars that could be used for a sweets table, and matching pedestal cake stand which would be lovely for a wedding cake or cupcakes.

Birdcages also look lovely with flowers/candles in - I used one for my cards which you can vaguely see at the back of this photo (can't wait to get the proper pics back!)

I just fed ribbon through it and made a tag for it - if you used something like these for centre pieces, you could attach the table names or numbers to them on tags like this.

You could always use charger plates and then vintage teacups with little flowers in. Cath Kidstonstuff is amazingly beautiful, although expensive. If you look on eBay for 'vintage tea cups' and definitely use the words shabby chic on any google search, there's loooooads of stuff. Also, I'm collecting vintage butterfly brooches to dot around my bouquet and possibly among the centrepieces. Incredibly cheap but a nice way to get an eclectic vintage feel.

This is the sort of thing I've been collecting:

Stuff like this can literally be £2 or £3 on eBay.

OOHOOOH and I just found this at http://www.toysandinteriors.co.uk/english-rose-shabby-chic-flower-party-bunting-1890-p.asp on a quick google:

    Hiya

we were going down the vintage route too and i have collected a few vintage tea cups and saucers from charity shops, they are literally a couple of pounds....we have put the cup upside down and glued the saucer on top-then placed a candle ontop of this!! (glued as well) it looks lovely..I even found a pair with 'wedding' aritten on them!! they cost me 1.99!

we may use white maribou feathers scattered on the tables and a few tea lights in jam jars as well..

Don't get anything too tall. I always hate that at functions when they block peoples view and also make conversing across the tables difficult.

I too want a vintage style look. I'm at the very early style of planning, but I'm thinking mixing something distressed like old candleabra and then with some shiny glassware to brighten it all and then softening it all with some flowers and 'earthy' foliage.

I think if you want that vintage look without going cheesy you need something secondhand in there.

And I want the lighting in the room quite low. Atmospheric.
