Vintage vintage vintage!!

nayso, 8 October, 2009 at 15:08 Posted on Planning 0 46

I am planning a wedding for May 2011 (which I know is aages away) but I cannot help but get stuck into the wedding plans our of sheer excitment.
So... I want a nice vintage theme to tie these two contrasting venues together:

www.wintonhouse.co.uk (ceremony)

www.thecavesedinburgh.com (reception)

My colours are going to be white and a deep lush green.
Has anyone got any ideas that could help me with my vintage theme?

I know... I'm super excited myself!

I dont know if you followed the links... but the caves is like a big underground vault venue. its stunning in candlelight. But i want to try and soften it up a bit with this vintage theme... so preferably decoration advice please.

With regards to clothing, atm im kinda stuck on the idea of a floor length hourglass shaped gown and a birdcage veil and fascinator.

:-) only been engaged a month but im soooo into this wedding planning :-)

I can see from the pictures the reception does look lovely.... I would say you would want more white with a touch of the green. Do you like butterflys? Have you thought of a birdcages with flora decoration? If I'm totally off track say!

I'll keep thinking and post back Smiley winking

    Yes I like butterflies...

The bird cage idea did cross my mind, so your on track. I was thinking of little tealight lanterns hanging above the dancefloor.

The other thing you should know is that we're spending a year travelling the world for our honeymoon... so I like the idea of using the old sepia world maps somehow. maybe naming tables after our desired destinations and having little framed old maps of those places instead of table numbers.

Also wanting to use old world map postcards as my rsvps

Think this with the delicate vintage twist will stop it from being tooo girly... my Fiancé is v involved and would probably have something to say about it being all butterflies and pink flowers.. ye know? :-)

Thanks so much for your help... this is my first post so I was unsure of how these forums worked.

I don't think you need much help as you have some wonderful ideas.....

How about a vintage candle centre peice for each table? Also I had a wedding where the table plan had black and white polaroid pictures of the bride & groom dressed in vintage clothing.

For the cermony have you thought of vintage handkerchief ring pillows?

Haha, I'm an interior designer so I should have an idead of what im doing... but its quite difficult to make sure your gettin the right ideas,... never done a wedding before.

What would a vintage candle centrepiece look like?

    Love the polaroid pics idea!

Also, what is a vintage hankerchief ring pillow?

Not sure if these are stupid q's.. but theres only oneway to find out the answers eh?

This is the type of pillow. If you have a page boy or bridemaid made they can also be a ring bearer.

Centre peice could be something below:

Ooooo - Im not sure if its what youre looking for, but I love the idea of themeing around vintage travel - havent seen a wedding done that way before...obviously with your sepia maps, maybe incorporating victorian travel ideas, Im thinking Grand Tour, safari, BOAC airlines, colonial, steamer ships, hot air balloons, Philias Fog...nothing more concrete than that though! Maybe you could create the original Montgolfier brothers hot air baloon for table centres, look to see what prop companies have, packing cases, I dont know!

    Hi Nayso

I have no suggestions for theme but just wanted to say how jealous I am that you are having reception at The Caves!!!

We went to view this as a venue for our whole wedding last month and I totally loved it, it's such a dramatic statement but unfortunately my other half didn't feel the same so we are still venue hunting, you must be so excited!

    Hi woo woo!

I know I love it too! the atmosphere is amazing!

My Fiancé had his reservations about it too... but im an interior designer and totally saw the potential in the place. were trying to soften up the hard stone with this vintage theme.

I like the idea of hanging litlle tealight lanterns above the dancefloor too to make it a bit more warm.

I am sooooo excited! Whats your date? xo

    Hi Nayso

    Welcome to the forum.

I just have to say how how wonderfully inspiring your venue is - especially The Caves. My first impressions was that I could imagine a fabulous turn of the 20th century, artistic and decadent, Parisian Art Nouveau kind of theme with peacock feathers and antique absinthe bottles etc. Love it! I think the lush green would work well with this too.

Loving the vintagey travel/maps ideas though. I had similar thoughts to Groomwithaview ? but a slightly later era. Maybe you could incorporate vintagey postage stamps into the stationery etc or vintage travel posters - Cassandre style. Or luggage label place names etc.

This theme will be amazing in The Caves. I like Prettywild's ideas, I definately can imagine all that in there. Prettywild is modest, but she creates the most amazing themed wedding bits and bobs.

Putting on my photographer hat now to give a bit of advice, take your time and lots of care with picking a photographer, because that venue will not be an easy one to photograph and do the atmosphere justice if the photograph has little expirence with such a dark venue. Talk to many, and ask to see as much of any low light or candle lit events they may have photographed. You don't want flashes blasting away the ambiant lighting in the photographs. It looks absolutely amazing, but it will take a specialist in low light photography to do it justice,, it will be worth it for fantastic photos.

    Happy planning!

    Teri

I'm getting married on the SS Great Britain in Bristol and they use the "promenade deck" for the ceremony and it's got loads of old trunks and suitcases down the middle. They said they would move them for us but I quite liked them ?

Hi Naomi sorry for the late reply, thanks for the list, we were hoping for Glenskirlie Castle as we loved it but the lack of dates in 2011 along with their bad customer service (in our experience) has put us right off.

We are now looking at a place in Bathgate, they have an open wedding event on sunday so we're poppong in for a nose.

Would of ideally liked a hotel but the plae in Bathgate looks stunning and there is talk of a hotel being built for 2011 so we will see I suppose.

Good luck planning your day, love the theme x

The Glenskirlie is gorg! my fiancé's brother had his reception there in june.

At that time though his other brother also worked there. But no longer... so he cant be blamed for the bad service! haha

what happened that put you off?

send me the link for the bathgate place if you like... would like to have a nosey.

    did you also try...

    melville castle

    prestonfield

    hopetoun house

    the signet library (stunning)

i could be insulting your researching skills here... but just in case you havent come across them.

Pearls, pearl and more pearls! Oh and some lace chucked in for good measure!

I had a vintage themed wedding last year (although our colour scheme was brown) and had a lace wedding dress, all jewellery was pearls, hydrangea flowers and vintage inspired guest book, thank you cards etc designed by www.prettywild.co.uk

I can't help with the lace but could certainly help you with pearls when you are ready to look at jewellery options. My website is www.louloubelle.co.uk if you fancy a nosey. Loads of pearl jewellery on there and I offer a bespoke service.

Hi sorry for yet another late reply!

Glenskirlie were really friendly during the show round etc but I felt that when they found out our numbers only just reached the max numbers for a saturday wedding (80 days guests) that the service went down from there, they were trying really hard to sway us to having a midweek wedding.

Also they had no saturdays free in 2011 so said when the 2012 diary opened in October they would call us and we would get pick of the dates, I called 3 times on the 1st of Oct and no one was available then again on the 2nd and still no one, said the wedding co ordinator would call at the first opportunity but I'm still waiting I'm afraid, never mind it's there loss!

Anyway yesterday we booked our wedding here www.thevu.co.uk, it's lovely and staff are so friendly think Glenskirlie's attitude was a blessing in disguise! x

I love the idea of going with a theme like that, love the fashion of that time Smiley smile

There were some great elements of photographer Jessica Claire's recent wedding featured on Style Me Pretty that you might get some inspiration of. I love how the men dressed in particular. https://www.stylemepretty.com/ scroll down a bit, there are 4 different entries for this particular wedding. I think it's awesome how the bridemaids also got to pick a dress of their own chosing, to suit them, just so long as it was an autumn colour. Wish we could depend on the weather here to stage a wedding outside like this, lol.
