My 9 year old has just brought home the violin from school, instrument of choice for year 4!!!

Don't think I wiil cope ?

    Ha ha... ours were drums, saxophone, trumpet and trombone.

    My two big sisters both had a recorder when we were small. That wasn't a nice noise!

    There is a special kind of awful, only heard in children learning string instruments. I played the cello - got good in the end but the first few years must have been painful! My sister learned the violin, and we both played the piano, I felt so sorry for our neighbours.

    Practice smiling supportively while inwardly wincing and you'll be OK. My violinist is in Y11 now and it's actually a beautiful sound but it took years to get there.

    We also have a junior cornet player in the house: less screechy but 10x the volume!
