Visiting York - where to go?

Daydreamer, 23 July, 2009 at 13:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Hi, don't know if anyone can help. Me and my H are going York for 2 nights in august , one day will be spent at the races and we are wondering where else is good to visit while we're there. Can anyone recommend any attractions or sites you've visited there that you really enjoyed?

Just so you know, it's just the two of us, I'm 29 and my H is early thirties. We like cinema, theatre, walking, inteeresting attractions (nothing too old fogey), animals so we're pretty open-minded!

?

I think York has great "hands on" museums. I love the Castle Museum, the railway museum (even though I am far from a train buff - but I like the social history element of how the railways changed 19th century society, and the museum reflects that brilliantly), Fairfax house and also the Jorvik museum. The latter is a bit cheesey but well done.

We also enjoyed walking on the city walls.

I adooooore the Castle Museum, it's so interesting. I spent about 3 hours there. You can do Clifford's Tower afterwards which is just next to it, and get amazing views over the city. The Minster itself of course, you can do a tour that takes you into all the high up turrety bits I think.

The city centre itself is worth a good few hours' mooching around, lovely little shops and boutiques (and a Mulberry outlet shop!).

Betty's for arvo tea if you want to do the real touristy thing.

Thanks for the recommendations. I went on York tourism website and there seems to be a lot of castles, museums so wasn't sure what to choose as we're there for just a short while!

V central, a stones throw from M&S and really sumptuous - champagne, fruit, drinks, roll top bath - kitchen stocked with our ready to cook breakfast. Can't recommend enough

Thanks for the recs Los1506, I'll check those out and then we can decide, will have to limit what we see, a shame as there seems a lot to do! I am one for haunted houses, so i might take a closer look at those one, i like spooking myself out!

lizziemh - i should have come on here before we booked anything! We went fr the cheap option and are going premier inn, class I know but at least the ones i've been in are clean ?

Handy thread, i've copied all the links posted. I'm off to York too in August for 10 days so hopefully get to visit most of the attractions.

Definately go to the Haunted House, 35 Stonegate.I was there on Sunday morning and did the "tour" alone. Nothing ever frightens me and I found that really unnerving. No ghosts; just really good effects.

Go to the Evil Eye Lounge for cocktails, fantastic.

Railway Museum, and of course, The Minster.
