Walking Holiday in Lake District - what do I need

shooting star, 7 April, 2008 at 19:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I'm going walking in the lake district for a week next week, we plan to do a big walk every other day and a small walk days in between.

This is what I'm taking - do I need more stuff or will it do?

1 pair walking boots (brand new, need wearing in!)
2 pairs hiking socks

2 pairs dry fit tracksuit bottoms
1 pair dry fit trousers
1 pair waterproof over-trousers

2 dry fit base layer tops
4 fleeces

1 waterproof coat
gloves
hat

I'm assuming there will be a washing machine in the cottage we are hiring. Any additional advice would be great as I don't want to get stuck 3 hours from civilisation and be cold and miserable.

Have you got another pair of walking boots / sturdy shoes? just in case your new ones cause you any problems. i always take a thermos of warm drink

depends on how 'serious' your walking is. if you are doing recognised walks then you will be fine with just OS maps but if you are going off tracks it might be worth taking some safety stuff in case of an accident.

And suncream and plenty of water to keep you hydrated.

I would think that's enough clothing, although some hiking socks need a thin pair of inner socks underneath.

Only other things I can think of is just stuff like plasters, water bottles, rucksack, map (with waterproof cover if it's likely to be raining every day.)

    Have fun!

Thanks - more socks and tops it is
    and plasters, suncream and flask

at least I don't have to fork out for more fleeces and the like.

I don't have another pair of boots, only running trainers which might be ok for the shorter walks (?).

my friends are taking all the maps and compass type stuff so should be ok ?

    thanks for your help

If you've got new boots I would well recommend a stash of Compede blister plasters just in case.

    Have fun! I'm very jealous!

You might be okay with trainers for some of the walks - I guess it depends on where you are going, and what the conditions are underfoot.

It sounds daft, but I'd make sure at least one of you has a first aid kit, and I'd recommend packing stuff in rucksacks inside a rucksack liner (or large plastic bag).

Your cottage details should say if there's a washing machine or not. Otherwise most of the towns would have a laundrette if all else fails.

We're off to the Lakes next Tues - can't wait.
