want to have a rant

Josie2, 8 October, 2008 at 12:14 Posted on Planning 0 12

I am not ure which section this should go in but - with just over 3 weeks to go to my wedding I have lost my job (sort of). I am a legal secretary specialising in conveyancing and the small firm I work for has decided that it can't justify/afford 3 secretaries and have combined the jobs into 1 positon. To make things fair they have made all three of us redundant and invited us to apply for the single post. Results on 27th Oct. As I have only worked in this company for 18 months, although for this fee earner for 2 and a half years, I am not entitled to any redundancy pay - so need to find a job quickly. The last working day is the day before my wedding - so has put a bit of a damper on it.

I am now at the mercy of recruitment agents who don't acknowledge applications for jobs, decide that you aren't suitable without actually talking to you or won't give the full details of the job (so you can decide if you are suitable) without you registering with them. I have applied for about 10 jobs over the past two weeks and not heard a thing. Not even an opinion that my CV is crap. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH.

One agency I spoke to was of the opinion that if you are a legal secretary the only real difference in the specialist areas are the forms you fill in and the procedures, both of which you can pick up and anyway most of the instructions are given by audio tape. Unfortunately no one else appears to share that opinion and I get the impression that as I am conveyancing there is nothing they can do to help as the housing market is crashing.

Oh well - had a bit of a rant, best get on with the little work that I have got.

Jo

Sorry you are in that situation and at such a stressful time for you already anyway!]

Where abouts do you live? Are you looking in london for jobs?

I am a legal secretary - I am surprised that the fact you have been in conveyancing makes such a huge difference, surely the secretarial skills are the most important factor!

I am in Suffolk - but could get to London (preferably near Liverpool Street) easy enough. I need to be able to follow the Lowestoft- Liverpool Street train line, which you would have thought woud have opened up the job market. Nope. Most adverts want you to hit the ground running and have at least 2 years experience in the field you are going into. The only problem I have is the further from Suffolk I go - the higher the wages to cover the travel costs. At the moment it costs £480.00 per month to get to London (not including any tube fares).

Some of the London jobs aslo ask for advanced Powerpoint. Not done any of that, but although I could learn, most forms will pick someone who can already do it. I can pretty much do anything else they ask but it is obviously not enough.

Luckily, the wedding is paid for completely. H2B was made redundant in June, and although he is working now he is self employed and it takes time to build up the business.

Anyone need an electrician in Suffolk, Essex or Norfolk?????????

I am getting married on 1st November. Able to start work on 3rd November. No honeymoon as H2B is building up his business and can't afford to take time out.

I have tried agencies nr Liverpool Street Station, but I think that the applications just go into a void. Same with Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich.

I'm getting married 1st November too! You should join our wedding twin discussion! I love being able to talk to others who are getting married on the same day and sharing the emotions we are feeling!

Plus you get some brilliant tips and reminders!

Just tried looking in my company to see if there is anything but no secretarial jobs other than document centre working from 4 til 11.30 - guessing that wouldn't be what you had in mind!?!?

Not sure what else I can suggest unfortunately as I have never dealt with agencies before.

As you can imagine with all 3 secretaries leaving we are fighting over the EADT and Evening Press. Have registered with a few agencies which also cover Woodbridge, but nothing yet. Also going to the Job Centre as well as looking online and trawling around the town looking in agency windows......
