was I rude?

whitetiger, 23 January, 2009 at 14:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

We have been having a few financial problems this month and the bank have been on the phone for the last week and a half. On Saturday H had an indepth discussion with the bank to say that we would not get paid until today and that there would be money in the account today. On Friday of last week during my 15 month olds nap time they phoned and woke her up, I explained H is at work until 6 could they please put a note on they system as my baby naps during the day. I was very polite. Every day this week they have found during the day even though I asked for that note to be put on. They phoned this morning and I said to them again that H wont be home until 6 and just now they have phoned whilst my daughter is napping.

I have just said the following to them 'I am sorry but H is at work at the moment. He is at work until 6 and I did explain that to one of your colleagues this morning. Please do not call until then as my daughter is asleep, I dont mean to be rude but I'm afraid I will have to be as I did ask for a note to be put on the system about phoning after 6 last week. Also, if you can check your records again as we have been paid today and their should be funds in the account'. I think I may have been a bit harsh but after H spoke to them for a good half hour Saturday and I have repeated like a million times that he is at work at 6 every day this week I am P*d off to the back teeth.

I am now worried I could get done for being rude but I am really at the end of my tether. I accept if we had our finances in order this would be happening but at the same time what the hell do they expect us to do that they have to phone every day?

I take the phone off the hook when my son is asleep - solves the problem quite well

If the phone ringing interupts your daughter's nap, can't you unplug the phone?

How do I take a digital phone off the hook? I will quite happily do that. I am so annoyed. LO is trying to drop her nap times as it is without having the phone ring to encourage it ☹️

'got done' for being rude. what on earth do you mean? ?

why can't they just call your H direct? on his mobile or at work?

tbh when i worked at a bank there was't the facility to 'put a note on the account' although it could all be different now.

To be honest I'd be pretty grumpy that they hadnt listened to your repeated requests too. And no I dont think you were rude, you merely explained the situation repeatedly, which seemed to be falling on deaf ears.

However, after waking her once, I'd have probably switched the phone off while your daughter was taking her nap though, that way they couldnt disturb her.

Good luck with your finances, think most people are finding things difficult at the moment.

Never mind the waking the baby bit, how do you mean you're worried you could get "done" for being rude? I've never heard of anyone getting done for being rude!

I wouldn't worry about it, I'm about to return to my old job as a manager in a bank call centre and we've heard a lot worse!

The system is awful, if you've overdue a payment on a credit card and the account is technically in collections, they'll call every day until you make a payment. If you've given them work and mobile numbers, they will also try and call those. It does seem like they will call until they get a hold of your H and everything is up to date.

I think you were very polite - you didn't swear did you?

Why can't they talk to each other?

    gah.

Can they press charges? ? Was I abusive? I think I had asked nicely a few times and then let rip at them politely but now I am worried they will press charges...

KTC I am so strongly tempted to hand them his mobile number but he teaches all day so I dont think he'd answer anyway.

I don't think you'll get "done" by the rude police. However, if you're trying to get the bank to be leniant with you over your account handling, you might be better off being pleasant.

If your phone is digital, unplug the base unit.

That's the problem even thought we now have funds they clearly have not checked their records.

Thank you guys for your replies you've made me feel tonnes better. You know when you just say something without thinking and then think oh god what if they recorded that and now I am in serious trouble? ?

I am currently looking for FT work. I applied for another job within my office which is more hours and also have another thing going on. We cancelled Sky last night and even thought I need my gym memebership, got rid of that too. Maybe if I cancel the phone line that would be two birds one stone? ?

? ahh, WT you're brilliant - such a good value hitcher.

There are loads of ways to stop a digital phone ringing - the easiest I find is to take the batteries out the handset if you don't want to scrabble round finding the base unit plug.

Is anyone else wondering how you "let rip politely" ?

i will be honest, and possibly risk eternal expulsion from BT for this, but when i was a collector the 'my baybeh is asleep' line would have cut absolutely no ice with me. i had a job to do and a target to acheive, and it would have made as much impact as the 137 other excuses i'd heard that day for someone trying to get put of speaking to me.

pressing charges for roooooodness. ? please don't let them bring that law in. ?

You ask them to "please fuck off". ?

I used to work for a well-known insurance company and my favourite ever complaint / customer feedback was where someone had gone to the trouble of writing "wankers" on a piece of paper and posting it to us in Claims.

    KTC thank god! rofl.

The thing is my H really is at work, how else do they expect him to pay them?

Janna the phone is now off - who knew it came with a very satisfactory off button ? Good value? Hmmmm, I make people laugh if nothing else ?

I must be the only person I know who is more polite when they lose their temper than when they talk normally....

Damn, I should have just gone with please *** off, why did I not think of that? ?

WT, it wasn't a feedback form as such. Someone had simply written "wankers" on a piece of paper and sent it to us. No name, no address, no policy number. Just "wankers".

Totally WSS. If it were me and I was trying to sort out financial difficulties I wouldn't care less when they rang - I'd be more pleased that they were bothering to ring at all and sort the issue out.
