Watch batteries?

Petal, 25 August, 2010 at 08:53 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

How much would you say was a reasonable price for these?

I was quoted £55 ? in the jewellers the other day. Is that really expensive or about right? (watch is fairly valuable so possibly the reason but still, I could go buy another watch for that!)

Blimey, that does seem a lot - what watch is it? (MrDD is a jeweller, I could check with him)

My Dad was recently quoted a huge amount of money to replace a watch battery and he ended up buying a new watch instead!!

I've sent him a text, but he can be a bit slow to reply sometimes so I'll let you now what he says when I hear back.

Just heard back (that was quick for him to reply)

He says they'd charge £10, unless it has a water resistance over 50m and you want to keep that then it would be more, although he's only ever seen Gucci's with upto 30m water resistance.

Sounds like they might be ripping you off a bit.

Blimmin heck! I didn't get the battery changed yet as I thought I would go elsewhere (they also said it would take 4-6 weeks to get it sorted - I assumed this is because they have to send it off to the Gucci Watch Battery Changer Specialist or something)...

    Dirty barstewards...

In case anyone is interested the quote was from Goldsmiths. Think I will speak to some of the independents and see what they say.

Thanks DD. That has hopefully saved me a packet. Much appreciated. x

No problem, glad I could save you some money.

Sounds like they probably do send it to some specialist - definitely give an independent shop a try, they tend to change batteries on the premises within a couple of hours (that what MrDD's shop does anyway) x

That's what I thought DD (at least that is what has happened in the past when Mr P has taken his watch for a battery change). I thought it may be because of the make of watch but possibly not.

My last job was in a jewellers that did watch batteries. If it is water resistant and you want to keep it that way it need sealing by a pressure tool thing - not usually found in your high st stores. Thats why they send it away - usually back to manufacturers. If you arent bothered about it being water proof, most places can do it instore.

Larger stores of Ernest Jones may be able to help you x

I'm glad I saw this thread. My watch decided to stop yesterday so I need to get a new battery. For some reason I had it in my head that i'd only be around £5 (its only a cheap argos watch) glad I know its gonna be a bit more than that! Think I'll probably head to timpsons too.

    Thanks

My friend works for a watch company and so I have a fab collection of designer watches. I pay £5 per battery at a local jewellers. None of them are waterproof though I don't think.

Her top tip is to pull the wind up bit out when not in use as it saves the battery life. It does mean I have to set the time when I change watches but I'm used to it now.

You're lucky to have a lovely selection HavanaBaby. I just have this one, an old DKNY one I knackered while traveling and a golden monstrosity handed down to me by a long lost relative which is wind up anyway. I can only wear this one watch as it is the only thing which matches everything!
