We were burgled last night-not sure how to feel!

Eirwen, 12 December, 2008 at 09:01 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

We got in last night to find the police at our house as a neighbour had phoned 999 because of some lads looking suspicious. The lock was broken on the back door and they took our Wii, a case of wine and a case of beer. That was it, despite cash being in a pot on the table and the camera lying about etc.

The police caught some people matching the description, though I don't know if it was them or not.

I just feel really wierd about it! Sort of numb and very calm, except for the part in the night where H twitched in his sleep and I shouted out because it made me jump and when he spoke to let me know he was coming in the bathroom which also made me jump so much I shouted!!

I'm waiting for SOCO to come and do the fingerprinting, so I feel I can't really touch anything!

Has anyone else been burgled and felt like this? Obviously its nice not to be a screaming wreak, but I just feel its all a bit unreal, which seems like an overreaction for some booze and a Wii!

So sorry to hear that. That must be awful.

Hope they catch them and you get your stuff back, although I'm sure you'll still feel jumpy for a while.

I hate this time of year, you hear of so many house breakins. We were robbed many years ago, I was a child in fact. I remember my mum being really upset and I just felt weird about it all. All of my toys had been smashed up and the TV taken from my bedroom, not to mention everything else in the house. After that we got a dog.

It's natural to feel jumpy and uneasy about things now. I hope the police catch the b@stards ?

It's more than what they took though, it's that they came into your personal space to take it. I hope that everything works out for you X

We were burgled a couple of times when I was a child, the 2nd time I was about 9/10. I can't remember what they took but I remember feeling that the house was dirty IYKWIM. I was also scared that they were hiding in my wardrobe and my mum had to keep opening the doors of it each night while I was being tucked in.

A heightened sense of reaction to things around you is one of the classic signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder so just take it easy for a day or two and look after each other OK? ?

We were burgled a few years ago during the night when we were in the house and didn't realise until the police came over with some abandoned stuff in the morning. I started off quite blaze about it but then felt shocked. I hated the fact that someone had been in the house especially as they had opened every door even our bedroom where we were sleeping. I found it hit me when the police came over to do fingerprinting.

Look after yourself today and hope it all goes well.

    ? to the scumbags!

I haven't got any advice as I'm in the fortunate position of never having gone through this. However I wanted to say what brilliant neighbours you have - more might have been taken if it wasn't for them.

    Hope you're ok.

It's horrible, and as others have said it's more of a case that someone has been into your private space rather than what has been taken.

We had a bike stolen out of the back yard when me and H had not long lived in the house and that upset me, i felt as though someone was looking in through the back window all the time, and when we were little we came home from the caravan that we used to have to find that someone had broken into the conservatory. They didn't actually steal anything as they had to get through more doors to get into the house and these door were alarmed but again it was the fact that they'd actually got into the house in the first place.

I hope you'll be ok, and i'm sure your senses will be heightened for the next few weeks.

This is exactly it. We were burgled ayear ago for our car keys - not much else was taken, but they came in while we were sleeping and the thought that people had been in our house while we were asleep was what did for me. Noises in the nighttime made me jumpy for quite a while, and even now I will sometimes wake up thinking I've heard something and find it really hard to get back to sleep.

Hope the SOCO people will be able to do something for you, remember you can claim on insurance for replacing locks if you need to - make sure any spare keys are still where they should be, as when we were done they didn't take the car straight away for some reason - if we'd realised the keys were gone we could have done something about it, as it was we woke up a week later and the car had gone off the drive.

Don't worry about your reaction - there is no 'normal', some people cope with this kind of thing better than others, just give yourself time.

We were burgled last year and all they took was my handbag. They smashed the patio door with a small boulder and the noise of that woke us up and I think preveted them from exploring more of the house. I felt like you do for a little while but it was almost as if I didn't have the 'right' to be too freaked out as they'd literally just put a foot inside and not gone rummaging.

The police were amazing I have to say, they turned up with sniffer dogs within 10 mins and we had SOCOs and CID call round over the next few days. Shame they didn't catch the bastards but I did feel like they did everything possible.

<aside> You know this is cos Kieren's neglecting her duties atm? ? The people of Leeds need her to get well soon!

Hope you can get back to normal soon and take it easy ??

Sorry to hear you were burgled, it happened to us about a month ago. They came in the house at 5am by putting a hand through the cat flap to get the key which we had stupidly left in the back door. I had a similar reaction to you I think, calm to start with, they took my work lap top, cash a phone and both cars, but the cars were recovered quickly with no damage so it could have been much worse. But I found that after a while I started feeling really quite sick at the thought of them in our house. Even typing this gives me shivers down my spine. For a while I was v jumpy at night, took a phone to bed, and woke at the slightest noise. But it has calmed down now so just give yourself some time. its a horrible thing to happen, and we have spent hours and hours on the phone with the insurers and getting new locks on the cars, we have just got the second car back today more than a month later, so its a complete pain in the neck, but it could have been so much worse.

Take care of yourself, try and do something fun this weekend!

Wow! Thank you for all your replies! I'm hoping things will be a bit better once they have fingerprinted and I can do normal stuff (like wash up-how embaressed was I that the was a big pile of washing up when the police were here!). I do know that we are lucky more wasn't taken and at the moment, I don't even feel funny at the thought of them going through my undies! Pehaps best mot to dwell on that too much!

I think all the spare keys are still here-I'll check.

I think my concern is that at some point it will hit me and I'll feel worse, but I guess if that happens, it happens. Its really reassuring to hear from people who have been there.

Kieren get well soon, your people need you!

Aw, L, i'm sorry to hear that. i hate burglars and like nothing better than seeing them locked up. i think like others have said, it's not what they've taken that matters as they're only things. it's the fact they've had the damn nerve to break into your house and help themselves to your hard earned property.

we had a shed broken into at the old house, and a case of lager taken and i was outraged. and that was only an outhouse, not my home.

have the police refered you to CASAC yet? they're pretty good at recommending security stuff...we've had our lock barrels replaced as there has been a spate of burglaries round here where they pop the door lock. if not, i'll get you the number.

Kieren, that's exactly it! I just can't get my head around the mentality that thinks its ok to take stuff we saved/worked for!

They said someone would come around and talk to us about security, so I guess that's the people you are talking about?
