Wearing engagment ring on a beach holiday

*Pugsley*, 4 January, 2013 at 20:53 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering how many of you if any, leave your engagement ring at home when you go on a beach-type holiday.

My OH thinks I should leave it at home when we go away next week as he thinks I'll lose it when I go to the pool/beach and take it off. Or he's worried it'll be stolen from the safe or something?? I take my ring off when I go to bed and I take it off when I do the washing up etc so I'd also take it off round the pool/beach too.

Do any of you leave yours behind when you go on a beach holiday? Or do you think he's being silly?

I haven't been on a beach holiday since I've been engaged, but I do wear my grans engagement ring on my right hand and I leave that at home when I go on beach holidays, it also has the added sentimental value though, not sure what I'm going to do about my engagement ring yet

I know exactly how you feel!

My h2b proposed whilst on a beach holiday in mexico. i loved it so much i would only put it on in the evening for dinner and leave it in the safe during the day.

Like you i take it off to wash up and for months at work I was too scared to wear it (i was terrified when it was busy i would bash it or trap it)

But slowly I did get used to having it on my finger and now wear it all the time other than washing up/ cooking.

I say take it and put it in the safe in the day..... they are called 'SAFES' for a reason Smiley winking then wear it in the evenings. Have fun! xxxx

I wore mine the whole time in turkey at the beach and the pool, so no chance of me loosing it! Xxx

Although just to argue with myself... I'm about to go away with work for four weeks (to some quite poor countries) and am leaving the ring at home for that. h2b is buying me a cheap cubic zirconia ring to wear in the mean time so I'm still 'engaged' while I'm away! Why not do that if it will make you feel better Smiley smile x

Mine never comes off wherever I am or go. I've got it covered under my home insurance.

I think I will take it and put it in the safe if I go to the beach or swim in the pool, it's not like I'm going to a horrible country, I'm off to the canary Islands... got as much of a chance having it pinched there than England! Plus it is insured anyway I guess.

I think last time OH really really didn't want me to take it as it was still pretty new last time we went away (I ended up having it re-sized at the jewllers when we were away in the end) whereas now he might not be so protective over it.

I love my ring and would miss looking down at it if I didn't have it for a week ?.

I'd rather leave it at home than in a safe abroad. Too many people I know have had things still go missing out of them.

Exactly my thoughts, I'm wary of putting things in the safe, so only take what I need on holiday, after all there must be mastercodes/masterkeys that the hotel staff have, who also have access to your room

    This.

But if you regularly take it off, I would leave it home and wear a cheapy replacement while you're away.

    Oh no!

I'll probably not leave it in the safe now you've said that. To be honest I'm not sure how much I'll be getting in the pool or sea as I doubt it's that warm this time of year so might be able to keep it on 24/7 anyway.

Or easy option... me stop being silly and just leave it at home!

I don't know if I'd ever want to take mine off! It's on my finger 24/7. The only time it's ever left my finger was when i managed to wedge my fingers in the inside hinge of a door and my colleagues were worried it was about to swell up so it'd have needed cutting off!

I went on holiday to the south of France last May and didn't take it off when I went to the beach. I hadn't even considered it before Admittedly, the sea wasn't really warm enough to swim properly in but I still spent hours on the beach playing with OH's nieces and nephews.

When I first got engaged I did start swimming all lopsided like a right weirdo because I was worried about it coming off so clamped my first together! I've got over it now though!

My rings are covered by insurance, but I take them off when swimming, exercising, on a beach etc. They go in the safe on holiday. At home I take them off before bed and put them back on after a shower. I read that soap and water can loosen diamond fittings so I avoid it. (good excuse to get OH to do the washing up)

I think I'll wear my ring and judge the hotel when I get there as to whether I'll leave it in the safe or wear it 24/7. It looks like a nice hotel but you never know just by looking on the internet.

Thanks for your replies, it's interesting to see the different answers/reactions. :-).

I lost my engagement ring in the sea, the silly thing is I would normally take it off and lock it in the safe however I forgot this day. We were on a boat trip and i took it off whilst I was in the sea and thought it would be safe at the bottom fo the camera case.... it was until i forgot and pulled out the camera and the ring literally jumped into the sea Smiley sad

    Oh no!!

I'm well known between friends and family for not getting in the sea or pool unless the water is warm. I go on holiday to be warm, not to freeze my norks off in the ice cold water. I doubt the sea or pool will be warm where I'm going as it's Jan so I shouldn't have the risk of losing it whilst I swim ?.

OH proposed 3 weeks before our holiday to Greece last year so I didn't want to be without mine and it was fine, I wore it in the pool and stuff however now I'm home I do take it off for washing up and cleaning. I think if you feel safe with it on then keep it if not I think the cheepy ring is a good idea x x

Mine was resized in October and since then I've not taken my ER off.

If it fits properly, it shouldn't come off at all.

I agree with this. I only ever take my ring off if I'm washing up or showering.

I've just had my ring resized (picked it up yesterday in fact - looks so shiny now!) because I wanted it done before we go to Australia next month. It's originally OH's mum's ring and it was wearable but fell off if my hands were cold (it's a wonder I didn't lose it actually) so I wanted it to be done in case it fell off whilst I was swimming in the sea. It didn't occur to me to take if off TBH (only take it off if I'm making something like pastry or bread where it might get really messy).

I wouldn't leave it at home because I expect OH's mum will want to check I'm looking after her ring (she lives in Australia). Even if I wasn't looking after it though, she'd have a job if she ever wanted it back - it's gone down from a K to G1/2...?
