Weather woes

MissZKG, 20 June, 2011 at 10:20 Posted on Planning 0 9

I know i know, i cant control the weather and everyone says 'it wont ruin your day regardless' etc etc but have viewed the weather for the next two weeks and rain, lower than normal temps, and GALES have even been mooted. Get married on the 2nd of july and having our reception in a garden - no indoor space at all. Am totally stressing that the garden will be a bog and the marquee will sink and as the flooring is hessian not hard wood etc, that we will all sink with it. ARGH!! If anyone can give me some advice, assurance, weather spells (!) i would be grateful!! Thank you.

You've got a while yet - the weather can (and will!!) change between now and then!

    Don't look at the weather...

The week before mine it forecast freezing temperatures and snow... we had 25 degree sunshine!!

They can't accurately predict the weather that far in advance...

Is it worth looking into a more solid floor just in case?

My advice is don't stress because it's the one thing you just can't change. Most marquees are sturdy enough to withstand a certain amount of gale weather, you can use a wedding umbrella if need be for the rain and most marquees that are hired come with boards that can quickly be laid in the main walking areas in an emergency. I've seen this done when I've been to country fairs in the summer when it's bucketed it down and it works really well. You picked a good day to get married by the way - my daughter's birthday!

The long-range weather says it will be a nice day down here in the south on 2nd July. I'm also getting married outside in the gardens of the venue on 2nd July so I am having the exact same anxiety as you! The long-range says the weather down here brightens up from 29th June onwards. I get that those forecasts cant be entirely trusted though. Whereabouts are you getting married?

Southern Wiltshire on the hants/dorset/wilts border.... the met office says the following:

"A brief spell of drier and more settled weather will edge out showers from northern and eastern parts at first. As the first weekend continues, cloud will increase from the west, with strengthening winds and successive bands of rain spreading in, weakening as they progress eastwards to give the driest and brightest conditions towards the east and southeast. This unsettled picture looks to prevail from late June and into the first days of July, with winds throughout generally retaining a westerly component, giving the main focus of wetter weather towards the west and northwest. These winds will occasionally be strong, with a low risk of gales affecting the exposed northwest at times. Temperatures generally start below normal, before recovering to nearer-average, with the southeast perhaps creeping above average at times".

But if you have seen a different one, please share!!

I have my fingers crossed for you, and am sure that the weather will be fine.

I have been to a marquee wedding where they had the sacking on the floor and it ended up raining quite hard - the floor beneath remained dry and I certainly do not remember any big puddles soaking through - so I am sure that you will be fine!

I can't assure you about the weather but the only advice is to try and have a contigency plan if it does rain. Couldn't you look into into a more solid floor as someone else suggested and have welly's and brolly's on stand by just in case.

Keeping everything crossed for you it will be a lovely day.

I have spoken to the marquee man (he is the bee's knees i tell you) and he told me about one he did last weekend - the marquee flooded and they had to re-do the whole floor on the morning of the wedding - dont know how he did it in time as he'd have had to of moved all the (laid-up) tables out first.... nightmare.

Anyway, hard flooring is an extra £500 for our size marquee - not possible really on our budget but also he said that as our venue's lawn is very even, that the hard-wood floor would actually not be a very good idea, it will cause more probs etc. He said the plastic underlay and hessian flooring will be fine.

As for a 'plan b' option, as it is an entirely outside venue (big ornate garden etc) and no indoor space at all, there really isnt a plan b! ARGH. Oh well, i will be doing the sunshine dance later on...

    WSS! With bells on!!

It's my town's festival week this week so I looked at the weather yesterday at midday to see if the parade was likely to go the full route or be redirected. Met office predicted weather at 1pm but sunny and dry thereafter from 4pm. At 1pm said rain began... parade came and went (started at 6pm, service or an hour - meant to be open air but indoors when redirected thankfully! and then back along to the beginning) and the rain was still on lol

Ok not pleasant for me yesterday but it does show how wrong they can be at ANY time, that was only a few hours in advance and they were wrong. Don't panic, do consider any changes you might be able to make should you end up with the worst possible scenario for the weather but do not give up hope that they're totally and utterly wrong!
