Wedding Cake

daisymoo86, 16 December, 2014 at 10:37 Posted on Planning 0 11

I have just ordered my wedding cake and I am so super excited!!

I am having a four tier cake, each layer a different flavour (chocolate, vanilla, lemon and fruit).

The 1st and 3rd tier will have a coloured lace effect and the 2nd and 4th tier will have a ribbon and pearl effect.

Eeeeek!!

Exciting! We have four tier too, with top tier (fruit) which we're saving. Our cake lady was so nice to meet and i'm so confident she'll do a fab job, can't wait to see it

Sounds lovely! Great variety for your guests. Can't wait to have a flash of it. I would have loved to have a four tier cake but ican not for the life of me do them (I'm making my own cake) so I am just doing three cakes and shed load of cupcakes. One will be Ivory and gold feathers, one pink gold and cream roses and the third will look like gold sequins all over. Having champagne and strawberries for one of the flavours , vanilla and then a carrot cake. The cup cakes will be a mixture of flavours not sure of what yet. God sounds like a lot to do lol how am I going to cope!

When we plan a reception-type party it'll be on a budget, but I really do want a wedding cake. I'm just not sure if we'll be able to afford one! Because I'm a vegan the option of buying a plain M&S (or similar) cake is out, and I don't know many people well versed in vegan baking. I can bake okay, but I dunno if I'd trust myself with something so important! We'll see...

My mum is making ours luckily, so won't cost us anything at all.
We're having 3 tiers, with 'messy' frosting, and at the moment 3 different flavours -

    red velvet, vanilla and toffee/caramel.

However, i really do fancy changing my mind and having all red velvet with cream cheese frosting- yum.

If it was totally up to me though, i would have a giant cheesecake as dessert - i'm actually thinking about having the cake for our evening reception because its low key and a big cheesecake for the breakfast dessert. This photo doesn't do the cheesecakes justice, they're actually bigger in person than they look here...but, one like this:

    Hey inkeddoll,

I am also vegan! We have opted for a cake table rather than one big wedding cake. Myself & family members are baking around 6 different cakes. They haven't done much vegan baking before but there's no pressure as we are going for a homemade feel and if one fails then we will still have the others so it doesn't matter! Not sure if you've seen the ms. Cupcake baking book but her recipes always seem to work wonderfully and have pretty standard ingredients that non-vegans should be familiar with! :-)

Yay, always good to hear from a fellow vegan Smiley smile

I thought about cupcakes or the like - in fact my brother had some amazing vegan cupcakes made for my niece's first birthday (she is lactose intolerant) so I would know where to go - but I have a hankering for an old-skool wedding cake! I did debate whether I could bake the basic sponge cakes and get someone who's more co-ordinated than me to decorate it, so that may be an option. I found a baker in Rochdale who has experience making dairy-free wedding cakes, but I just dunno if we can afford it!

It is tricky isn't it, especially on a budget, that was our struggle too! More and more vegan places seem to be popping up though so there's always hope! Making them yourself and then getting someone else to decorate could definitely work. Failing that, I wonder if a vegan cafe might be able to make one for you, for less than someone that specialises in occasion cakes as such? There are a couple of places near me that do lovely vegan cakes which would be much more affordable than your average wedding cake. I'm in cornwall though so not much help to you, but I wonder if there would be anything similar near you? Just a thought!

Another vegan here - there is a vegan bakery in Leeds that isn't too absurdly priced, and their cakes are lovely. http://thatoldchestnutishere.com/our-cake/wedding-cakes/

I don't know if they'd deliver so far but if you have someone who drives they could always pick it up the day before.

I'm torn between making my own and ordering from there at the moment, got a few years to decide yet though!
