Wedding cake as dessert

Kitty1987, 24 October, 2010 at 09:11 Posted on Planning 0 23

Hi.

I was just wondering if my guests are likely to find it odd if we serve our wedding cupcakes as desserts? We are having a buffett and we would have to sort dessert out ourselves (company doesn't do any sort of dessert and the desserts on the venues menu are horrible lol). Our thinking is guests will get there sweet fill with a cupcake and then we will open our sweetie buffett?

Anyone think this is a silly idea?

Not at all, my best friend didn't have a wedding cake, but instead had some fancy deserts as their alternative as part of their buffet. I think it was on a cheesecake that they had their wedding figures, which were Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.

No, not a silly idea, often at weddings the cake doesn't get eaten so this is a great way to make sure it does! x

Our daughter is doing the same thing - they are having a four tier "wonky" cake, all different flavours - chocolate sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot cake and cherry sponge with a small separate fruit cake made in the traditional way.

Not silly at all. We wanted to do this but the venue wouldn't knock anything off for not providing and serving dessert so it seemed silly to pay for something that we weren't having as part of the reason was saving some pennies. If you can do it, do it!

We're doing this too! Again its to save a few pennies, wedding cakes can be so expensive, but I really wanted to have one so at least this way it'll get eaten and not left on a buffet table. Planning to serve it with a few fresh berries too.

Thank guys, glad it wasn't a silly idea lol. We have just hired a funtion room above a bar so there is no charge to take food in so won't cost us anything to serve our own cake lol.

The deal they have is room hire is £200 if you want to do you own catering, or it's free if you take there catering. Worked out much cheaper to hire the room and sort out our own catering!

Well, the wonky cakes sit on top of each other like these:-

But I know lots of people who've had chocolate cakes - I'm sure the cake ladies on here will be able to advise you on this one!

My Grandma made mine and we had bottom layer fruit, middle choc sponge and top lemon sponge. She said the bottom layer had to be fruit so it could support the other two layers, but the other two could be anything. Another good alternative is carrot cake as this is quite sturdy as well. Its defo possible so maybe worth mentioning it to her!!

We're doing this too! We are having cupcakes as favours, and a 3 tier wedding cake, 2 tiers fruit (jamaican rum) and one tier sponge. Will have the biggest tier (fruit) and middle (sponge) cut up fro teh guests dessert. We are also having fruit arrangements made by 'Tooty Fruity' for desserts; two bay trees made from strawberries and dipped into white chocolate x

We had the cake as the dessert at our wedding yesterday. We did the cake cut before the speeches and then the chef cut it up in the kitchen to serve.
