Wedding Cake dilemma

katie80uk, 20 May, 2014 at 11:51 Posted on Planning 0 4

I have my mum making my wedding cake, choose a lovely design and all happy with it.

She has now said there is no way she can take the cake to the venue for the daytime and then transport it in the car to the reception for the night time. I wanted my cake at the daytime so pictures can be taken but then wanted it at the night time so everyone can see how wonderful it is

So looks like back to the drawing board and a simple cake. Am i best just having a fake cake at my daytime and then the actual cake at my night time so i can cut it infront of everyone? My fault for choosing a big cake i suppose :-(

Can pictures not be taken at the reception? Personally I would have it delivered to the venue in which it's going to be served and have the cake cutting photos there which I guess would be your second venue. I can see it would be a nightmare to transport it, set it up to take it apart again, transport it and set it up again

Usually the cake is only seen at the reception location. It's not moved about on the day.

Do you have two different reception locations? Eg one for the meal then another for the evening do? I'm trying to figure out why the cake needs to move?

Also, I'd advise caution re a 4 tier cake like that if your mum is not an experienced cake builder. That cake needs internal supports and if they are not done correctly it could collapse.

A simpler, less risky option would be to hire a 3 tier cake stand and make 3 cakes, one for each tier. That way, the cake is a munch simpler construction and the stand bears each tier instead of the cake requiring internal supports.

Yeah we have our daytime at one venue, then a 20 minute travel back nearer home for the evening venue.

My mum makes cakes and is quite experienced with them. Shes just finished doing my brothers that was on Saturday and the cake was amazing.

The cake would have internal supports in it as it stands quite high, so she knows all that, just not sure if i really need the cake then at the daytime if it is usually cut and seen by everyone at the night time. Probably one less thing to think about if its just at night time :-)

I've always just seen cakes at the night time where you have the 'cake cutting' where there's photos of it taken and then it's served with the buffet, I wouldn't bother having it during the day to be honest.

    Lovely cake!!Smiley smile

Wow That cake is stunning! Smiley smile

I'd suggest have the cake in the evening when it is going to be cut and served - less stress all round then! Smiley smile
