Wedding cake for dessert anyone?

miss_sunshine, 13 December, 2011 at 14:10 Posted on Planning 0 17

Hi ladies

Will it seem a little strange that we will be serving our cake up for dessert?

We are having canapes with welcome drinks so we could save money on not having a starter. Then we sit down for the main, then the cake. Does this seem odd to you?

BTW: Our cake is going to be a profiterole mountain so more of a desert than a cake anyway.... I think my problem is that people would have had one course then we cut the cake (or in our case pour the chocolate sauce). Do you think its too premature and do you think people will reaslise it is our wedding cake? What do you think!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers xxxxx

    Certainly not weird.

Before you said what type of cake you were having, I'd have said it's not a weird idea, but I would prefer a "proper" dessert to fruit cake etc. Now that you've said what it is - I'd love it!

Not weird at all. We are doing the same. Wedding cake for desert with some fresh fruit and cheese.

Our cake was dessert. It was either choc or vanilla sponge.

I love the idea of pouring chocolate sauce on the profiteroles instead of cutting a cake! I think if the tog starts snapping away everyone will realise it is the wedding cake. I think it's a great idea - it doesn't just save money, it also saves any waste as lots of people say that the wedding cake doesn't really get eaten as it goes out after the evening buffet and no one notices! (I am a gem of a guest in this respect, I have a nose like a blood hound and as soon as that cake hits the buffet table I charge for it!!)

Its a fab idea & a great way to save money. We did the same thing at our wedding (although wish I'd thought about a profiterole cake!).

Surely when the MC stops everyone & says you are going to 'cut the cake/pour the chocolate' they will know its your wedding cake. Won't it be on a seperate cake table anyway in the centre of the room? Is it in the shape of a crochembouche?

You can also get edible gold flake to add extra sparkle & contrast the chocolate. Yum!

Um I just had to google the word crochembouche! Yes it will be in that shape. It won't be out on a display table as It will be brought out as a surprise with the sparklers going for a bit of a wow factor!

Thanks everyone for your replies!!!!! made me feel a lot better about it i must say!!

I think it will look great and if I was a guest I would be very happy with that as dessert instead of fruit cake as I can't stand the stuff!

No-one thinks its strange the 'cutting of the cake' is after one sit down meal then? This is the main thing that worried me. People would have just sat down to enjoy their meal and suddenly We will be getting up to do what is normally done after the meal or in the evening.....

The fact we are not having a starter makes the meal very short thats all.

I would think it was fine, but maybe I have mis-read. Aren't you having the meal, then doing the pouring instead of cutting, then eating them? That will be fine - in my head anyway. All you are really 'missing' is the period where a starter would be, but I imagine you won't notice as you will be chatting to people anyway.

Maybe you could do speeches and toasts while the catering staff are dishing up the profiteroles in the back, and then go into serving it as dessert?

We are doing the same. Helps save pennies! So we will be cutting the cake and dishing out as pudding as otherwise 8/10 times the cake is not eaten!

The profiterole mountain is fantastic, just pitching it to the other half (his favourite pudding is profiteroles!!!

    WSS.

When I first read the title of this thread, I was a bit worried in case you might be serving just fruit cake, and it seems to be one of those things that people either love or hate. If ours wasn't all included, I would be working on OH to have a cake made of different cheesecakes and serving that up, yummy!
