Wedding cake help needed please . . .

vikmast, 21 February, 2011 at 21:07 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hello everyone. Im really stuck with what to do about my wedding cake. Ive not got to get it yet but dont wanna leave it till the last moment. I was going to get it from M&S, the traditional cake however, want to dish up the cake in the evening buffet so that everone can have some if they want it. This would work out to cost more then I was planning on spending. I want to get a sponge cake (and maybe a small fruit cake) but dont know where to get it from and save on money too. Im no good at making cakes, and went to asda who only do fruit cake tiers. Wouldnt mind just having a plain white iced sponge cake (in different sizes for 2 tiers or three) from a shop that I could decorated myself, then maybe have extra cutting slice in the hotel kitchen to just cut up. If anyone knows any shop that do this then please let me know.

Try waitrose. They may be more expensive than M&S but you know it's quality!

My lovely mil TO BE is making mine< but you can easy peasy buy all your cakes individually and then if you go on the m&s website it shows u how to stack them properly< even sponge on sponge> the m&s cakes are also tiny< only twelve inches on base case> buy a nice plain decorated sponge in three sizes from tesco for you local baker then decorate yourself with stuff from cakeshop or real flowers or whatever your theme is! xx

then buy and extra plain one and get it all cut up ready in the kitchen to serve>

Where do you live? I often make wedding cakes for friends and family etc and if im short on time I go to a place near manchester - I just ring them up a few days before and they bake me madiera, chocolate or fruit cakes in any size I want - then I just fill them and buttercream them and pop the fondant over the top! super easy and really cheap x

How many pieces do you need of each? Or are you keeping your fruit top tier.

We have ordered a medium fruit from M&S and Large and Extra Large sponge plus a fruit cutting cake just incase anyone didn't like sponge as we wanted to keep the medium fruit to keep as tradition for when we have our first child.

We have tasted the sponge and it's gorgeous Smiley smile

M&S do a sponge wedding cake as that is what my friend had for her wedding last year - and I decorated it with some sugar flowers...

I am making my cake - but cheating hugely!!!!

i am making a fruit cake for the bottom tier - serves about 100, then my other tiers are made from polystyrene blocks so that 1) they are all neat and perfect hight and 2) i can ice them in plenty of time for the wedding so have time to re-do if they go wrong!

I am then makeing a chocolate orange mud cake and a sponge cake covered in white icing to have as cutting cakes out the back - then it doesn't matter if the icing goes wrong cos no-one can see it and it will be cut up by the time it comes out - and no-one will know that the actual cake was fake as we'll still be able to cut the bottom tier!!

if you know someone who can decently cover a cake, this could be an option....(if that all makes sense!)

I've just looked on the Tesco website, and they have got this cake. It's just a white iced sponge with a couple of lowers on the top. I bet the flowers would come off so easily as well! Might be an option. Not sure how big it is though.

    Hope this helps! x

I was gonna get mine from Tesco until my friends Mum offered to make one for us. Cake is cake to me, I can't understand why people pay hundreds of pounds for them.

I live in Reading. I want to serve it to everyone within the buffet so would need to go round approx 150. I want sponge cake ideally, however might get a small fruit cake as cutting cake just to serve
