Wedding Cake - please help

justengaged, 20 May, 2009 at 09:00 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi all,

I am hoping u will help me! I am very worried about our wedding cake, our cake maker has told me it will be 8 inches high when finished which seems very small to me. It is 3 tiers on top of each other, one fruit, one chocolate and one sponge, is this about right or should I be worried?

Hmmm......8" seems big with some things, (errrhum ?) but quite small for a wedding cake.

Are you sure they've got the measurement correct? It's not 18"?

That does sound small tbh - think M&S cakes might be similar - for my cake each layer is around 4-5 inch

it depends how many you want to feed from it and also does it have a cake topper that would give a bit more height ??

Could you stand it on something to make it look taller? Or use those cake pillar thingymajibs? Or a tall cake topper.

How many people is it for though???

It was going to be for the evening about 150 people, but am now thinking may be best moving it to the day for 90 people! H2b is calling them to see if they can add a extra tier on to make it taller!

I could tell this was going to happen 4 months ago, but nobody wiuld listen to me then now 2 weeks before we need it ?

Thinking cap... what you could do is...

(aha! light bulb!) keep the cake you have, but the cut up pieces that get served could be an extra cake that doesn't get seen by your guests before it's cut. (I know someone who did this, we didn't realise it wasn't the same actual cake we saw them cut). That way you would have plenty of cake without spoiling the aesthetics of what you've planned.

Following on from what fvj199 said, M&S do 'cutting cakes' so these could be kept out the back and cut up and none of the guests would need to know. Unless the icing was a different colour?! Not that I suppose anyone would really care if they weren't getting the actual cake!

But if it's how it's going to look that's worrying you then could you not add pillars or a topper of some description?

That does seem really tiny height wise though.
