Do your parents or grandparents etc still have the topper from their wedding cake? Maybe you could use this. I've seen some in my family that are quite plain but with lace or even just a horseshoe made out of silver. Maybe something like this would work?

I think thats a really good idea - although like someone else said, if you go to a good haberdashery (like JL) they should having different lengths of pearls.

Also if you wanted to keep costs down you could get your plain iced cakes from a supermarket who does wedding cakes and dress it yourself.

What about putting a piece of vintage or mock vintage jewellery as a cake topper or in the pearls in each layer?

Most cake decorators will have suppliers for beads, ribbons etc so you might be able to save time and money by getting them to supply these on the cake for you.

To be honest, a ring of pearls around a cake would cost pennies and wouldn't even become an added cost in our eyes...
