Wedding cake - to be or not to be

crowett, 9 June, 2012 at 06:47 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi everyone completely new on here and have just booked wedding for next march. Both been married before and although I wanted the smallest of days we've got 50 to the wedding breakfast and 100 plus at night! I want to keep things informal but do we have to have a cake?? I know it's tradition but.... Help! Your comments on this and how to keep it informal are most welcome.

Thanks!

Why do you NOT want a cake? Is it because you think it will make it all too formal? I'm not sure I think a cake makes something formal, but if you think that, then by all means don't have one. You don't have to have anything, really - only what you'd like to have. If you want something to 'look at' in place of a cake, you could have a dessert table with lots of puddings that you both like - or ask all of your guests to bring their best effort in terms of a pudding/cake and display them all ('Aunty Iris' treacle sponge' signs would look v cute) and then everyone could tuck in as part of the buffet. Or have a display of cheeses and serve them as the buffet with crackers, pickles and chutneys.

I think it depends on the formality of your cake, more than having no cake at all! I woudlnt be paying £000's for a 4 tiered thing if you think its too formal. Lots of other options, M&S ones, a cheesecake style cake, a single cake rather than tiers, a crochembouche which can be served as dessert. Or as the other hitcher said, a dessert table with several cakes/desserts.

If you want the cake, have the cake.

If you want to save some money and have a wedding cake, I've read some people have a small fancy cutting cake and a slab cake hidden out the back to feed the masses with (same cake, much cheaper to make).

But it's your wedding, do what makes you happy.

You could always go for cupcakes? As someone else said it's more the cake itself than whether you have one or not that makes it formal or informal & nowadays anything goes. I like the style where it's Victoria sandwich & buttercream with fresh fruit like raspberries & strawberries & sprinkle of icing sugar on top. Looks scrummy & can be used as a dessert but remember it's up to you so do what you want to do.

    Welcome to Hitched ?

As others have said, its your day! You dont have to follow tradition if you dont wish to. I think you could have one and maybe use it as your desert.

You could have a cake if you liked cake but it doesn't have to be traditional.

I made this for my friends birthday, its a three tier sponge with jam and cream and raspberries. Its not formal, quite cool looking but its still a cake? Have a look at some cake sites to get an idea. There is no point going without cake if you think it makes your wedding too formal. We're having a really intimate ceremony and an informal party at night and we're having a cake.

Its your day and you can have whatever you want. I know cakes are a traditional feature but if you choose not to have one I don't think anyone will be too bothered. Your guests are coming to see you and you other half get married and whether or not you have a cake is irrelevant x

Aww thank you ? It's not as hard as it looks!!

I'm too much of a perfectionist, i do more elaborate ones for familiy with my mum, we did a playable angry birds cake (mistake, there was cake splattered up every wall in the kitchen) and a cake of the O2 arena in London. But they involved a LOT of hissy fits Smiley tongue

I suppose it is up to you. Marks and spencer do some fab cakes for on a budget and like a previous poster said you could always just have a small one and a cutting cake somewhere out of sight.

Cupcakes are also a good idea.

It depends what you want - if you really are not bothered then don't worry. The idea of having a high street cake (M&S, Sainsburys) is an option or cupcakes would be a perfect informal touch.

My friend got married last year and she had cupcakes. She had a centre piece of a larger cupcake It looked perfect. I really liked the touch - not sure how much it was though.
