Wedding cake white lie

RomanticBlueBridesmaid35410, 31 May, 2019 at 20:30 Posted on Planning 0 1

We just want a simple, one tier, semi-naked cake (white iced) for our wedding. I am going to add some decorations myself and add a personalised topper. I have previously bought birthday cakes, fully iced and decorated and roughly the same size and shape as we will want for the wedding and these have costed between £40-50. Of course as soon as we ask for the same size with a simpler design but mention the word wedding we are quoted £80??‍♀️

Has anyone ever just asked for a simply iced cake (one tier) and tell them it’s for a birthday and you are going to self-decorate? We are also having a tier of Krispy Kreme and one of cupcakes so I won’t lose sleep over spending £80 on the cake but it just seems crazy paying double the price for the same cake!! Probably an unpopular stance and I do feel guilty and am terrible at lying- wonder if I save myself the stress and pay for the ‘wedding’ cake?

Thoughts?

Wedding cakes are more due to the planning and time that goes into them. If you're after a plain one to decorate try the M&S range.

Often the reason the price jumps when you mention 'wedding' is becasue this means you no longer will be collecting the cake but need it delivered and setup on site. Usually a weekend. They then deliver it and put on the finishing touches. For the regular cake they quoted was that exactly what you wanted. Or was there another requirement you had as it was for a wedding?

Any baker would have no problem with you just ordering a cake and collecting it for the regular old cake price so go for it.

As someone who works in the industry I can honestly say the wedding tax does not exist. No price is just increased for no reason. Its just a wedding usually means different requirements and demands from the couple so that becomes an actual different product.
