Wedding colour!

laura9889, 20 February, 2012 at 20:17 Posted on Planning 0 21

Hello!

Well me and my partner couldn't decide on a colour so we decided on black as only colour we could agree with! And was going to have a damask pattern sort of theme! Since I toldd my mil every time I've seen her she's been like so you thought of any colours for the wedding yet and I was like yes we've chosen black every time and I knew what she was getting at that she didn't like the idea and today she came out with it that she didn't like the black theme and I told my mum and she was I don't like black either! So now I'm sort of going off black any colour suggestions would be nice ? Or any accents to go with black? I would like a dusky pink but oh says no pink! Lol

Laura x

We're having black and white, with hints of purple. Black looks good with loads of colours, pink and black look awesome together though.

I had the same problem when I said I was having Teal! My mum said - 'it's not Teal, its green - you can't have green!' and my response was tough I like it! We have now bought the table decorations so no going back now and I am sticking to my guns!

I feel like I need to really impress my MIL lol! I don't know why ! My partner just said we like it so what does it matter! I love the pink and black but partner isn't keen! I'm sure I can squeeze some pink in without him knowing !

Black has become a lot more popular in recent years and I think it is harder for people of an older generation to see it as anything but a funeral colour. Maybe you could put together a mood board to show her how you want to work it so she can maybe get past some of her worries.

Otherwise, I think most striking colours look good with black and have added them to lots of invitations, here are a couple of examples for you:

Look forward to hearing how the plans develop

I know how both Mums feel LOL! Our daughter decided on black for their wedding and informed me she wanted black flowers too - I was like .... Okaaaaayyyyy.... Mmmm nice! But they decided to mix with magenta and gold with a bit of polka dot added which looked lovely. I've added some photos below so you can get the 'feel'. I think the problem is that it's hard to imagine a wedding using black but it can look very classic and timeless or go down the completely opposite route as our daughter and son-in-law did and go quirky. I've done lots of weddings where the bridesmaids have worn black. In fact I'm doing one at the moment using bright yellow roses and freesia. Hot pink, yellow, orange and red are great colours with black. Here's a few photos of their wedding:-

I think black can look great, especially mixed with one or two other colours to liven it up a bit. Google some images of black weddings with your oh (particularly nice pink ones if that's the one you like!) and see what you find together. I think for the older generation black may seem a bit odd and 'out there' for a wedding but they need to move with the times lol.

Some great suggestions here, but have you thought about having black and ivory - If trying to decide on another colour gets too hard! It's great that you've chosen a colour together and for that reason, I'd say stick to your guns and have it. I understand your urge to want to impress your MIL but, IMO, you're better off standing your ground now rather than making a rod for your own back later on if/when it comes to other things you might disagree on (not that I'm suggesting you have anything other than a fab relationship with her, I'm just saying start as you mean to go on).

    Happy planning ?

I've chosen cadbury purple for my colour, and my mil2b has commented on many occasions that purple is a funeral colour, and its going to look too much like a funeral with purple on tables and deorations......... it's the only colour i've thought about ,i don't do pink!!

I had black, with pink and purple

I think people would have been shocked if I DIDN'T have black TBH.

If you like it, go for it. It's your wedding, not your Mums or MILs

Color schemes that work well for a spring wedding could look entirely out of place in mid winter. If you are having a spring wedding consider fresh greens and yellows, and perhaps look at pinks and pastels for a summer occasion. Warm earthy tones such as chocolate brown or burnt orange are perfect for an autumn wedding.
