Wedding date clashes with the 2014 Football World Cup

Peter, 24 February, 2013 at 20:39 Posted on Planning 0 41

Another thread prompted me to post this......Most on here will not have come across this before We 2014 football world cup is from 12 June to 13 July 2014.

In previous world cup years we have had some unhappy brides having to share their day with a widescreen tv. Are any brides with dates across this period aware of this possible issue, and if so, what are they doing about it?....

Peter

Really important point here. Although we moved ours to May because my OH didn't want me and my entire bridal party AWOL watching footie. He couldn't care less but I won't miss a match!

At my friend's wedding there was an England game of some sort, they just put a big screen up. Personally, footie is a big part of my OH's life (him and all his friend's play). I would happily put up a big screen for him. My mum is also a massive footie fan so it would be appreciated all round.

We wanted to combine our honeymoon with World Cup and maybe try and see a match! But the wedding is later on in the year now. We would've put a screen up and watched it during the wedding too, especially if it was a big game Smiley smile

These are different replies so far compared to 2010 when most brides were far from happy about having distractions like this on the day...

Reminds me of my counsins wedding in Sept 2001. THINK it was an England Germany match for something and most of the guests disappeared into the other bar of the pub to watch. Didn't detract from anything, and even those of us not interested ended up asking for score updates. Soon livened up again once the game was over, and as we won (I believe) everyone was very happy lol

Yeh I was worried ours might clash with the football but luckily our date is in May. Personally I wouldnt really like it, maybe its unreasonable, but I think id feel a bit disappointed if people missed things we'd spent time organising because they were gathered round the TV watching a football match. I guess its different if you're actually interested in the football yourself though!

When in May is it? Hope it doesn't clash with FA cup final! That was another concern of mine, if my team makes it or my sisters (MOH) does then either she or I would be noticeably absent also!

Ours is 4th May. Ive just googled it and it says the final will be on 10th May. My family are massive Everton fans so I'd lose a load of them to it (including OH!) if they were in a big match! ah well fingers crossed there wont be a match on that day. But if there is we'll just have to deal with it haha! Smiley smile

Ooh date twin! Didn't think I'd have one as it's a Sunday!

Yeah luckily my OH isn't a football fan at all so that's lucky. My family on the other hand are all HUGE football fans, so he might lose me to the hotel bar!

Ooh I must be heartless. If my wedding was on a big match day I wouldn't care, sorry. It wouldn't figure in our planning. If people would rather miss our wedding than miss the match (which they could always watch later, surely?) then they're not great friends and we don't need to worry about feeding them.

Compared to the other replies I sound really harsh, don't I?!

Well, our wedding is on a Friday, on a weekend where there are usually internationals (meaning the Premier League and Championship don't play) - which means I won't miss a game for the wedding day.

With any luck I may only miss one home game during honeymoon.

I'd be more concerned about our wedding day being the same as an important match day for my OH's team, if they lost he'd be upset ?

One of the reasons I wanted to avoid summer is so we don't clash with any sporting events. If it was world cup then I think I would carry on regardless, there's not really any scope at our venue for a screen.

Interesting thread Peter ? We were married on June 10th 2006, at 2pm, the same time as the first England match of the world cup started. Neither me or Simon are big football fans so weren't bothered and it wasn't something we considered at all when setting the date. The ceremony was about 10 minutes late starting, and Michael Owen scored really early, which the registrar saw on his way back from seeing me and going back into the ceremony room, so announced it to everyone and got a big cheer Smiley smile

Also our venue was in the middle of nowhere in the lakes, so no mobile signal. There was a TV in the bar, so a few people may have nipped in there to watch a bit of the match - to be honest though as there was so much going on I didn't notice if anybody was missing.

This was one of the best days!!!! I was working in a bar in Spain & we had the match on our big screens. By the 3rd goal we closed the bar & the staff were just dancing on the bar pouring straight out of bottles. I don't remember much after the match ended but I know I didn't get to bed until 8:30am the next day!!! Ha!!! Obviously not responsible drinking and I do not advocate such behaviour! ? Man, I loved that match!!! (sorry totally off topic but I have the best memories of that day!)

We specifically wanted to avoid football season, including the cup final and play-offs - OH and his friends are footy mad and he didn't want anything to detract from our day Smiley laugh

As I was insistent we got married before my (big) birthday, we only had a choice of 3 dates even though we were booking 2 years ahead!

This puts me in mind of my first wedding many years ago. I had to organise it so it fell between the football and cricket season (as much as possible), and then because of the weather the Cup Final for the team he played for fell on the day which was actually Grand National day. Prior to, and since then, he never ever watched the Grand National, but that day it held a huge attraction.

I had this 2006 1st July England vs. Portugal 1/4 finals the kick off was 4pm and the time of the wedding was 4pm !!and it went to penalties.
I am not a football fan (I googled the facts) I often wonder how wedding photographers who are fans actualy cope.
I think that they arranged for the main bar tv to be off. so this happened
This was a chap at the back of the ceremony room with a portable tv and ear plugs.

This was during the reception drinks

And this was on the tables during the wedding breakfast

Notice it was all on mobile tvs as back then there was no samrt phones, I dont think that you will have any hope of banning any watching next year if that was your plan, you may as well go for it and make a theame of sorts out of it

Around 25 years back I photographed a wedding in North London where the bridesmaids wore earpieces during the ceremony to listen to their team (Spurs) in the FA final.....

The "issue" is Bluebell, is that people will come to the wedding and then look for somewhere to watch the match....usually the bar or they may "disappear" to their rooms to watch in there. I have seen all of this several times over the years...☹️

Was that v Forest in 1991? H went to that when he was 8. He cried when Forest lost apparently.

With regards to the OP, we wouldn't have had our wedding on the date of a major footballing event. We'd have lost half the guests, the groom included.

Our wedding is 4th July 2014, and this has just occurred to me, so thank you. However, the venue we are having is a large converted barn with a sofa/seating area which happens to have a TV on the wall. I think to have it on during the evening (if that is the timing) would be fair enough and wouldn't mean we would loose anyone out of the room. I think it will just add to our day actually, and OH is a massive football fan. So much so, that he is naming all the tables after the Arsenal Invisibles and making the table plan out of an old retro table football lol.

Last year we went to a wedding that clashing with the Champions League Final. The dancefloor was full of people refreshing BBC live text on their phones, and a couple of the lads were streaming it on iPhones, particularly once it reached penalties. The bride wasn't bothered luckily. My sister also went to a wedding the same day and the same thing happened there. That said you can embrace it - I know some friends of friends who incorporated the Olympics last summer with themed games and tables, etc.

Personally it's the first consideration for us - avoid big football and cricket dates - but we're both sports fans, as are all the family and most friends, and I can't see my dad missing a Forest match even for his first-born's wedding (he's still bitter about missing us go top of the old, old Division One in 1986 because he 'had to be present' for the birth of my sister. We've not been top since).

Ha - very similar to H's family. Massive Forest fans.

H's dad is still annoyed at missing the final of Superstars for the birth of his first daughter.
