Wedding Debt

Mrs_T2B, 13 June, 2010 at 17:08 Posted on Planning 0 13

So ladies, this may be a bit of a personal question and I completely understand if no-one wished to answer, but have any of you got into debt by having your wedding? I mean in the sense of taking out loans, or having a dedicated wedding credit card, or even borrowed money?

We personally have budgetted as though we would pay for the wedding ourselves, to what we can afford. We don't feel the need to let costs spiral our of control, or to get into any debt for our wedding.

Hmm not really any debt... weve put our honeymoon on credit card (incase it gets cancelled) cuz we have a brill moneyback service if it does.. but have the money in the bank to pay it off as soon as we come back.. I think if you start planning with nothing you would have to get in to debt.. but i reckon most will have a bit saved before they start! Smiley smile x

We borrowed a little from OH parents as we had to get a new car on top of everything else. And my overdraft has taken a bit of a beating but apart from that not really. We should be able to pay that all off straight after the wedding quite quickly!!

But by the national average cost of a wedding £21000 we have spent considerably less than this at £5000. We just didn't see the point in putting ourselves into debt like that for the sake of what essentially is a big party. Rather spend the money on the house or the family we hope we can have eventually.

I completely agree with this! Our wedding is currently less than £6k and all we have left to budget for is BM dresses, flowers and invitations. I see weddings on Four Weddings where they have spent like £25k and it looks the same as what we are having, if not less!

    It's just pure madness!

No, no debt. We're lucky as parental contributions will cover the majority of the day and our savings the rest.

Not looking forward to the credit card bill after the honeymoon though!

Nope, we paid for it as we went along. My hubby was made redundant in September and was out of work for six months, that put all plans on hold as the money went into paying the mortgage, luckily he got a brilliantly paid job in Feb and it meant we were right back on track, if he hadn't got a job then wedding would have been postponed or massively scaled down, I personally wouldn't go into debt for it.

We haven't got a budget for the wedding. We've just bought what we can afford. And If I can get cheaper I will. We've not got into debt for the wedding. I'd rather spend the money elsewhere.

Not yet. though we are relying on OHs bonus to help us with costs. If work are meanies then we will have to consider battering the credit card a little.

We've kept the wedding and honeymoon separate so we can save for each - frustrating but worth it!

No debt here, we have saved for our wedding we gave our selves a rough budget and saved what we can afford each month meant we had to wait a bit longer but we didnt want to start married life with debt and we didn't want t touch a lump sum I alreaddy have in the bank as that is for the next house we buy. So we had to save.

We haven't although I suspect we'll put our bigger purchases (like our honeymoon) on a credit card simply for the protection it offers. We'll then pay it off on the same day.

Our wedding is by no means cheap, but we are lucky that H2B had a large sum in savings so we are using some of that.

I think the trend to get large loans for weddings has subsided with the current climate

Julia has a really good point about loans in the current financial climate. It's been so nice to see so much creativity at the weddings I've been to in the past year. Makes it all so much more personal too.

My dad has been very generous and paid a big chunk of our wedding and for the rest we are getting a small loan. My oh is terrible at saving and i am saving for my dress. By the time i eventually find 'the one' i will have enough money to pay for it. ?

I don't agree with getting into debt and my oh and i have only borrowed a small amount that we can afford to pay back comfprtably
