I know it's a complete minefield isn't it.

What I did was find the dress/es I liked, then checked on line for bridal shops within a distance I was prepared to travel that had the designer of the dress/es i liked and just randomly emailed each store with the dress style/name/number to see if they had it. You'll be surprised that the majority will get back to you straight away with a yay or nay. Also if the shop doesn't have it they may be expecting it or may know of a shop that has it. I must have emailed 30 shops and the majority got back to me with no problems at all.

When looking for a particular dress I just called stockists of that brand and asked them.

If they didn't have it, some offered to order a sample at a cost (about £40) that would then be deducted from the price of the dress if you were to purchase it.

Although, the two shops I went to (before the one I bought from) offered to do this for about £100. I then found out that both of them would have simply had the sample couriered from the shop I eventually bought from...
