Wedding Dress

MrsCtobe2016, 17 October, 2014 at 11:10 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie to hitched, but my friend used it for her wedding last year and said it was brilliant.

I've just booked and paid deposit for my wedding, the official date is now 10th September 2016.

My question is, when is it best to start looking at dress's? I do want to loose weight before my wedding day. And my OH has told me I have to stop being so caught up in the wedding fuss of things (I told him once the venue and registrar was booked that I would calm things down but its made me even more excited to plan things) so the next thing I really want to do is look at wedding dress's as he has no say in this matter. Haha.

When is it good to start doing this? I don't want to start looking to early, partly due to wanting a weight loss but also as styles change so much will this make a big difference if I found one now?

Any help is greatly received Smiley smile

Welcome to Hitched and congratulations on your wedding!

It's certainly not too early to be looking at dresses - it will give you a real feel for what style you like, and what suits you. Many of us will tell you that the style we have in our head is nothing like the dress we end up in! Even if you are losing weight, your basic "shape" will probably remain the same - ie I am a classic Pear shape, regardless of whether I am a size 16 or a size 8 (yes, I have been all the way up, all the way down, and now comfortable at a 12, but still a Pear!!)....so you can get to know whether A line, fishtail, or a ballgown for example is going to work for you.

If you find THE ONE, you will know it. You can generally put down a deposit, but not actually have your measurements taken until nearer the time....so, perhaps this time next year would be ideal. Then they will order it once they have the measurements. It often takes 6 months + to get the actual dress in, so don't leave it too too long, otherwise your last minute alterations will be rushed.

The one really important thing I would say is that you shouldn't put too much pressure on yourself to lose weight before the wedding. Please be realistic. There are many many threads on here with brides who fully intend/intended to lose weight before the big day but actually find it harder than they thought to get motivated and do it. Wedding planning should be fun, not stressful, so don't put undue pressure on yourself if you think you are going to lose weight because you "should" not because you genuinely want to.

Oh, and when you do find the one - we expect photos!! Either of you in it, or of a model on a website - but it is the LAW haha!!

I believe at this stage would be laying out the things you like for your wedding and more on canvassing. It would be easier to decide at a nearer time when you have looked at a lot of options Smiley smile Planned my wedding for a year and that's still not enough, I tell ya Smiley smile Good luck and Congrats! I ordered my dress 15 months before the wedding, which I think is earlier than most but it takes 8 months to come in, so should arrive next month, with 8 months to go until the wedding. Try all different types of dresses even if you aren't that keen... It may look amazing on! Totally agree about not putting too much pressure on yourself to lose weight, just be happy and healthy and you will look gorgeous, whatever size you are Smiley smile

I get married May 2015 and I got my dress December 2013! Once you find the dress you know that it's yours! But I would suggest (and this is not through my own experience) that you do not continue to look at dresses once you've found the one.

Hello and welcome to hitched! Smiley smile

I am a 2016 bride and I went to look at dresses a few weeks ago now just to get a feel of what I wanted. Well I found the one, I absolutely feel in love and knew I couldn't beat it. They took my measurements and I ordered it. I told them I wanted to lose weight (a dress size) but they said that they can always take a dress in but it's harder to let out so better to do it on my current size. It's also a corset back so easier to pull in. It will take 6-8 months to come in so I think it's never to early.

My advice is if you feel you have found the one don't worry what people say. You will know when you find it!

Enjoy it, have fun as it is a fun experience! When you do find it we will want flashes!!

    xxx

So it's never to early! Smiley smile x

Congratulations & wecolme to hitched. What venue did you book? I got my dress 12 months in advance. Takes 5 months to come in. I dont think its ever too early to start looking. However once you find the one, stop looking! In regards to the weight loss, depends how much weight you intend to loose. If its 1 or 2 dress sizes (like myself) the dress can be taken in nearer the time of the wedding with no problems. I wanted to order my dress in a size smaller than my current size, but was strongly advised against it by the shop assistant. If you want to lose more than 2 or 3 dress sizes, i personally would wait a bit. Dont be too hard on yourself with the weight loss thing, be realistic & dont stress yourself out x

Congrats on your wedding.... Exciting isn't it!! As all the others have said once you try dresses on you will deg know when you've found the one.... I bought my dress yesterday and the lady said it take 6mths to order so don't leave it too late! As with the weight loss, I've been worrying about it (pear shaped size 12) but when I tried on dresses, I found I'm
Not as worried about the weight loss now, as the dress I have chosen really compliments my figure. Go and try some on..... It's fun!!!! Xxx

Thanks lovely ladies for all your help on this.

I've decided I'm going to have a start looking in April 2015 as my best friend is coming back from Australia for a mini holiday and as she will be one of my bridesmaids and will miss a lot of the planning I think I'm going to take her along with me to still be part of the hype.
