Wedding dress advice please?

Mellow_Yellow, 21 March, 2012 at 08:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

I know that this belongs in WP but I'm aiming this at the OM's so hope you don't mind me posting here. I had my dress fitting last night, it needs taken in a bit and up a lot as I'm a shortarse...no surprise there. I was really comfortable with the alteration lady and she comes highly recommended.

Now to the problem. Even with everything all pinned up I found it really hard to walk. She said that once the extra is all cut off it should help as I'm holding a lot of unnecessary weight, but when walking around the house I couldn't walk forward without holding up the front of my dress. I'm worried that I won't be able to walk and dance on the day. I love my dress but think it might be too huge for me. I had an underskirt on, a Jupon one, and as it fits 8-18 I felt it was a bit too loose, would sticking a safety pin in it to make it tighter help me to walk?

Have any of you had a big dress and able to offer advice? I'm having a minor panic attack over here!

In the end up, i found my dress to be big and heavy on the day (they should really let you practice wearing it for 8 hours + rather than wear it for 20 minutes. Anway so mine looked like this

But i did manage to dance!

No advice as my dress was small and light - but RKB you look gorgeous!

Although I do think on the day you will probably stop worrying about the dress and be carried along by the fabness of everything so your focus won't be on the weight of it.

    This may sound sooo stupid...

But I found it really hard to walk in my parents' house, wearing my dress and heels. It felt like I had to either hold up the front or kind of 'kick' the dress along in front of me.

On my wedding day though there weren't any thick luxurious carpets to walk on, only hard surfaces, and it was absolutely fine. I wonder if you are sinking slightly into your carpet at home?

That might be completely not applicable to your situation but I thought I'd say!

Also it might be better to get an adjustable hoop rather than an underskirt? Mine was adjustable, and while I didn't want too 'poofy' a dress, it actually made it much easier to walk to have the hoop on the biggest most sticky-outy point because it held the dress up and away from the floor and away from my legs. Once your seamstress has got it to the right height for you, you will be able to walk in it I am sure.

    ? Thank You AC! ?

Also, i had an adjustable hoop on my dress (still have it if you want it!) and it made a big difference from the underskirt i'd had on originally!

This is exactly how I feel, our house is all carpet, the venue is all wood flooring...so hopefully!

Mellow - I wouldn't worry if I was you. You'll be on such a high that you won't even notice. You'll get on with it and forget you even worried about it. My dress was huge. I had to squeeze myself into a tuk-tuk. Imagine a golf buggy! And get on a boat but I was fine. Walking about was fine, only had to hold my dress up at the front walking up steps etc. I even climbed some very steep, very narrow steel steps! Just dragged my dress through with me lol! It will feel hugely different once your alterations have been made. Hope that helps, sorry if I went off on one!!xx

Once its alterned it will be fine. Mine wasnt big and poofy but when it was too long before altering I had to kick it out etc and i worried about walking in it. Once it was finished it was fine and i walked, danced and partied my way through the day with no issues!

The lady in the dress shop advised me to pin my hoop at the waist to make sure it was nice and snug as they can fall during the day. It did help so I would do that if I were you.

I had a big dress and had no issues on the day. I was on such a high that I didn't notice the weight of it or the hoop or anything.
