Wedding dress - colour dilemma

Ohwhatatuesday, 21 April, 2013 at 18:42 Posted on Planning 0 20

I'm having a bit of a meltdown and I could really do with other people's opinions/advice!!

I chose and ordered my dress yesterday and couldn't have been more excited - I've tried over 40 on and tried this particular dress on twice on two different occasions and felt exactly the same about it - I know it's the dress for me and I had to have so I thought I may as well order it. the problem is I've started to have a major panic about the colour. It comes in white, ivory and light gold. The first shop I tried it on had it in ivory and the second in the light gold. I didn't really notice the colour difference until it was up against another dress which was white or ivory but on, the light gold colour really seemed to suit me and my skin tone. Because I knew I wanted the dress and the colour looked good, I didn't think much of it so I ordered it in the light gold.

Today I'm really panicking it will be too gold/yellow. It didn't look very gold at all but I'm really worried in daylight it will look really strange. I was also hoping to have silver, purple and blue as my colours and I'm now not sure the silver will go. Not too much of a problem but is silver coloured jewellery/tiara going to look odd?

Also - what about everything else - against white table linen, shirts is it going to look really strange and off white? I guess I would have the same problem with ivory but I've got myself into a real panic that I should have gone for a more traditional colour. I know the colour was best for me but I feel a little bit sick that it's going to look different in the light and worried about seeing it again in case my fears are answered.

I know I panic every time I make a 'big' decision (I did the same with the venue). So I'm hoping it's just that. But I'm really worried about mixing silvers/golds and getting colours that match. What does everyone else think about a light gold dress?

The one on the website is light gold too but think it shows more than this in the flesh.

Sorry it's so long just in a bit of a panic!

Personally if I was guna have a light gold dress I'd opt for warm colours to match like reds, burnt oranges, rust colours etc or browns and creams. And yellow gold tiara/jewellery. Silver, blue and purple are cool colours so would compliment a white dress but that's just me and my opinion Smiley smile

If the dress colour suited you best then choose whatever you want for your day. If you like blue, purple & silver; have it! Smiley smile I'm sure you can make it work. Just drop lil hints of your dress colour in with the others. I'm guna completely contradict myself and say chuck bright yellow into the mix and that'll look awesome! ?

Thanks for the thoughts - this is why I'm panicking so much - if I'd chosen a classic colour I wouldn't have had anything to worry about but I'm rubbish at mixing colours/knowing what goes together so I'm worried it's anything I choose will look odd, really don't want to wear gold-coloured jewellery so this is my big panic!!

The blue& purple we're thinking of are very dark (more like plum and sapphire) so fairly warm...I think!

Could the bridal shop provide you with a sample? Then you can carry it around when trying to buy things. I bought a sale dress so was able to take my sash with me to compare colours.

Also it might not be as bad as you think - I've found that I 'forget' exactly what a colour was like when you've looked at so many other colours. My dress is ivory but it started turning yellow in my head, I had to go to my Mums house to look at it just to make sure it wasn't as yellow as I was picturing!

Would you be having pearls in your jewellery because that would tie in with the light gold?

If you don't like the idea of yellow, what about jade green? Think peacock colours because they look beautiful together and would also look good with the gold Smiley smile

Peacock colours is a great idea thanks - and pearls too - the dress has glass beads all over it so I think silvery tones in jewellery should go ok and if I go slightly warmer with your colours.

I've done exactly the same with the yellow though - I'm convinced I'm going to walk down the aisle looking like a canary!!! I've looked online and apparently in most cases the shop should be able to request a sample for me so I'll phone and ask tomorrow. I'm just so worried it'll turn out to be a really horrible colour - wish I'd gone with white but know it would have looked harsher with my skin tone.

First of all, you won't look like canary! It's lovely!

i would stick with pearl accessories...if you're having the cap sleeves, get some nice dangly earrings, a simple pearl headband and bracelet. If you're going strapless, have small studs and a plain pearl necklace (*snort*). Sapphire and plum, in particular, would be lovely.

and NOBODY will notice your dress clashing with tablecloths!

Thank you for your comments and advice - I'm rubbish with colours so don't really know what would go/wouldn't and what would look weird and I think i'm just winding myself up into a panic about it (esp the tablecloths!!).

Pinterest has helped me so far so hopefully it can strike again - I'll take a look thanks.

Pearl is definitely a good idea, i'll look into it - I have the sleeves so was thinking I'd probably opt for no necklace. I've got my heart set on sapphire and plum so hopefully can make these work too! Just worried it will look really out of place and I should have opted for a safe colour. Can't believe I've got the dress of my dreams but have still managed to find something to worry myself about it. Just feel a bit stupid as I'm meant to be really excited about booking it and I just feel a bit deflated...

Would it help you if I said my sisters dress was mainly white but had light gold parts to it (bits round the waist and in the train) and it looked lovely it didn't clash at all with anything. Their colour scheme was green and gold (south Africa colours) so although not the same colours as yours her dress looked lovely next to everything. I do think you are worrying a bit too much about what things your dress might clash with eg linen, shirts etc as white and gold in my eyes cannot clash and gold and silver look lovely together

MrsSkinnerTobe - that does really help! Thank you!! It's not gold gold, it's a kind of pale goldish colour and looked fine in the shop next to everything I'm just panicking I think because I never expected to buy a 'gold' dress. It's reassuring to hear I'm being a bit over the top with the clashing, I think because I don't trust myself with colours, I'm just worring about everything.

I love the look of your dress and the colour! Yesterdays bride had a very light pink dress. In some light you couldn't even tell. It looked amazing slightly different.

I had a light gold Maggie dress and our colours were navy and pink so not a million miles away from blue and purple - I'm sure it will go fine! I also stuck to pearl jewellery to avoid any problems with clashing metallics. A sample of your dress fabric is a good idea - I found it invaluable for seeing whether things would go together.

Couple of guest piccys for you (you can probably see the colour of the dress better in the second one):

Thank you so much for the advice comments and photos - really useful to see examples. I've phoned the shop and they're letting me go in this afternoon and try it again and, as long as I make a decision today, they'll let me change the colour so I will keep you all posted!

So for an update - I went to the shop to try it on again and tried on another Maggie Sottero similar ivory dress to compare it to. Both looked lovely but the gold was definitely too gold/beigy for me and the ivory looked just as good on (if not better). The gold one definitely looked odd with silver tone jewellery/tiaras and would have looked a little strange with my brooch bouquet (many of my brooches are silver-tone). So after about an hour of looking at the dresses, holding up different colour bridesmaid dresses to them and different/jewellery and tiaras, I decided to swap to the ivory one and immediately felt sooooo relieved.

The bridal shop were amazing and considering I'd already ordered my dress and paid the deposit I can't believe how much they went out of their way to help me and can't thank them enough. They immediately phoned the supplier and swapped the order for me and confirmed it.

And I'm once again mega excited about my beautiful dress (in ivory!) and can carry on with my original colour scheme plans!!! Thanks to everyone for your comments and advice (think I'm still going to steal a bit of inspiration from peacock feathers for my bluey purple theme). And thanks MrsSkinnertoBe and liverbird for posting photos to help me decide. Can't believe how lucky I was for finding a bridal shop that let me swap! They're also sending me an ivory fabric sample to match things to as well!
