Wedding Dress - Internet or Shop?

VickytheBride, 2 January, 2010 at 10:00 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi all

I am getting married in November ? and have started looking for my wedding dress in the past week. I have been to about 4 different shops and tried some beautiful dresses but they are just so expensive when compared with some of the dresses available on certain internet sites.

I was wondering if anyone had had any experience with these internet sites where you send your measurements and the dresses are made abroad? It seems like a bit of a risk but they look beautiful on the sites!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated ?

    Hey,

both my sis in law and my mum got there dresses from ebay. sent over fron hong kong to the measurements and they both loved there dresses. My mum had a slight prob with her first 1 but they sent a replacement out straight away. I will be looking at getting mine from the internet.

just try and order well in advance so if you do have any probs then they can be sorted for you.

    Good luck x

I think you do need to be wary though. A friend of mine brought hers from ebay which was made abroad somewhere and it was terrible. Her fiancee's aunty had to take the thing apart and put it back together properly as it was so badly made. Have you thought about sample sales or discountinued lines or sales? x

I've ordered mine for a place in China. It should be ready to send to me in the next few days!! I'm excited and nervous.

The site I went through listed the dresses by designer and I was so lucky to fall in love with a designers dress that they did. I couldn't justify spending large amounts of money on a dress that is only going to be one for one day - only 9 hours to be exact! The dress I fell in love with was £997 and I've paid £153 for it (including the speedier delivery option).

A lot of negative comments i've read are that the material wasn't as good as the original or that the stitching was a bit dodgy. TBH - a lot of the dresses I tried on I didn't think were worth the price tag so i was happy to take the risk (there's is a £1000 contingency in the budget mind you so I can always run out and order an original if needed - though I pray to God I won't have to).

I should be able to post in the next few weeks once I've received my dress!!

Not sure if this may help but noticed whilst browsing on Marks and Sparks website today that they are doing wedding dresses - prices were around £130. Bit of a limited choice though.....

I personally would be too worried about buying a wedding dress off the internet as it seems to be the luck of the draw with what you end up with, some people have had really good experiances others not so, although i can see the attraction to saving sooooo much money.

you could try end of line dresses, after finding out the dress i tried on was £900 i made an excuse that i wanted my friend 2 c it before i put a deposit down then ran out of the shop as fast as my legs could carry me. i later spoke to the shop on the phone and told them i only had £300 to spend. At first they did try to fob me off with the "buget range" but they weren't what i wanted, in the end they bought about 10 sale dresses out from the back and i ended up paying £300 (plus £145 alteration costs)for a dress that was originally £945.

This was Moya's dress - it was lovely but I have to tell you that shes since gone and bought another dress from a bridal shop. She might be around later to explain what happened.

As others have said, some people are 100% happy with their dresses and others arent. I do think the difference in prices are so huge that its worth the gamble....but only if you have the time. My dress was discontinued so was half the original price making it just under £500 but I know Littlewoods, M&S, Monsoon and BHS all do lovely dresses on the high street - might be worth giving them a look before you go down the ebay route???

I got a dress made to measure off ebay, when i received it it was very badly made, the measurements were totally out, the stitching and the beading were frayed and all coming off so i went and got mine out of a shop. however, i have used lightinthebox for my bridesmaid dresses and they are fantastic, and they do wedding dresses, they might be worth a look, good luck!

Shop shop shop shop shop. you can guarantee the quality, material, and sizing (mostly). this goes for high st shops as well as bridal shops - you can at least see what the dress will actually look like on you before ordering, and you can guarantee the material, beading etc will be the same.

    and WgillsyS about moya's dress.

there are looooooooooads of high st shops doing bridal ranges now - if price is your main motivation for looking on the bay of e, i strongly suggest that you either look on the high st, or look at bridal shop sales, or sample sales. there are usually plenty about.
