wedding dress shop scam - anyone know anything?

MayDay, 27 June, 2008 at 21:39 Posted on Planning 0 11

My step-dad told me about some story he heard today about wedding dress shop scams, where there is a group of fraudsters setting up bridal shops in the south east, taking deposits and then closing up. I saw the post about a shop in Lynhurst and wondered whether anyone else has heard anything? Quite worried now!!

I wouldn't say the Lyndhurst shop was a scam at all. They have had some very happy brides in the past. I got my dress there for my April wedding. Something obviously went wrong though and she clearly though not ordering dresses was going to sort it out?!?

Maybe that shop is not involved...I'm sure there are some shops which are genuinly closing. Just wasn't sure if anyone else had heard this article. Just worried as I'm about to order my dress!

I haven't heard anything like this either. I work for a bridal accessories manufacturer, and I personally deal with finding new bridal shops and making all the necessary steps towards getting a first order. I have not come across any shops like this at all. May I also add that Arvella was a genuine shop who have done business with us for several years, it is very unfortunate that this has happened.

I agree it is unfortunate...didn't intend to pinpoint any particular shop. I guess I just wanted people to be extra cautious! That's all.

I guessed you wasn't, I just wanted you to know that I am in the position where I'd be very likely to have heard of such a scam, and I know nothing.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would do this as it takes alot of money to set up a bridal shop - and if u had that amount of money u wouldn't need to do a scam!!

If you are worried then make sure u go to shops that have been establised a little bit longer and hopefully this way u will avoid any mishaps.

What i think is happening is girls get married and think they can just start a bridal shop on little money because it must be a fun job

    yeah right

they dont get enough funding and then when the brides dont buy they struggle and end up closing down due to bad management and not thinking things through or not giving the service brides require

they think its all fun and one big game and its not at all , its bloody hard work , long hours and a lot of stress in the background , its not all about selling dresses its the full package you have to offer and the service you need to give from day one

thats my theory on it anyway lol

I second that Cariad, I have so many emails from people setting up new shops, and about 2 thirds of them are brides who enjoyed planning their own wedding and think it will be fun! Probably about 1 out of 10 actually make it to shop opening day, and not many of them last very long at all.

I want to support that...I'm not in the wedding industry at all but have nothing but mountains of respect for those businesses (and people) who are. I have the upmost respect for people who deal with us bridezillas on a daily basis. It's such a huge responsibility being part of someone's wedding day and I'm not sure i'd be up for the job!
