Wedding dress shopping **with flashes**

LittleMissP, 17 October, 2011 at 11:33 Posted on Planning 0 14

Sooo......last Saturday I went Wedding Dress shopping with my Mum and my 2 bridesmaids and went to three shops that day, and had a great day. I agree with everyone elses comments that dignity certainly goes out the window when trying on the dresses, as you can get very intimate with the sales ladies! However, i was very knackered by the end of it as it's surprisingly tiring getting in and out the dresses!

The first shop we went to the ladies were lovely, I had an hour and 1/2 appointment and this was enough time. They didn't rush me at all and i was allowed to spend as much time as i wanted to in the dresses. All the dresses fitted me which felt great, and if the straps were too long or if it gapped anywhere tshe'd pin the dress so i could get the best idea. In the second shop, the ladies were ok, the appointment was an hour and i was rushed in and out of the dresses. When i was in the dresses, they asked me if it was the one and i'd say umm not sure and they were like ok lets get you out of it then and it went straight back on to the rail. Third shop i hated, all the dresses looked cheap and nothing fitted and there was no attempt to pin the dresses so i could see what it would look like and she would send me out in a dress that didn't zip up so felt like a whale in front of a very packed shop!

I'll flash some pictures my clever bridesmaids took when i was getting changed of my favourite dress, the only problem is that it's nearly £300 over my budget at £995, now i do not need to order it until february so could save up the extra money but i'm worried that becuase it's all lace it will cost a small fortune to be shortened and altered. Have any of you ladies had a lacy dress and could tell me how much your alterations cost so i could maybe factor this in?

At home i don't own any plain normal socks, so when trying on the dresses i had a lovely pair of blue with white spot socks on! One of my bridesmaids managed to take a photo of me (much to the annoyance of the sales lady!)

I also liked these dresses too, what do you ladies think?

    The dress is lovely!

I know its more expensive but looking at the other two you like they are all different Smiley smile So you need to decide if that is "the one" keep looking and if you cant stop thinking about dress 1 then thats the one Smiley smile

I do really love the first lacy one and i think i do have my heart set on it, if not that particular one it would have to be very similar. As when i went to the other shops all i wanted to try on was lacy styles.

Ok, well I tried one on really similar to that one! I love it, I think it is gorgeous and I have a dress very similar and the dress lady didnt advice me it was anymore tricky to do alterations to it than another material.

What dress have you got, if you don't mind me asking? I might phone up the dress shop and ask them in their opinion would the alterations cost more because of the lace, i only think it maybe as i'm rather short at 5ft and may need quite a lot chopped off!!

I have a lacy dress and having it altered quite dramatically. My dress is a size 16 and I am a 6/8, so there's lots for her to do and it also has a lacy jacket/bolero that needs to be made smaller as well (see flash - any excuse!). In total my alterations will be £150. Now I think this is quite a lot, but my dress was in the sale, so half price, and even with the £150 alterations the whole lot was under my £700 budget, so it didn't really matter to me.

I would enquire with the dress shop or whoever as to how much the alterations would be before you made a decision.

I wore the bottom left one (Mark Lesley 2080) I had a bolero Jacket made with the same material which was £300 and alterations cost me £280 to have it taken up a few inches and taken in twice around the bust and once around the hips. I love all of the dresses you've flashed - good luck x

That dress looks lovely on you, it really suits your figure.

I've just spoken to the wedding dress shop and she said to shorten the dress would not cost any more than £100, if i would need any other parts of the dress to be altered the cost would depend on how long the seamstress takes to do the alterations. I also checked if this dress would still be available in February which is the latest i can order the dress and she said it definately won't be discontinued as it is a very popular dress. That led on to be second cheeky question and i asked if it would by any chance go down in the sale between now and february and she said no as it is still in high demand. Oh well, worth a try!! She also mentioned that the shop do a payment scheme so after the deposit i wouldn't have to pay the rest of the amount in another lump sum and could spread the cost over a few months.

I think i'll keep my eyes out for similar styles and save a little bit extra just in case ?

My dress shop does a standard alteration price of £150 regardless of the material. Mine is a sample dress though and only needs hemmed so they're doing it for £60. Ask around a few local seamstresses as well, you might find there's a huge difference in what you get quoted. As for the dress itself, keep an eye out for similar styles at other shops, my dress shop has very similar dresses to another shop I was booked into, but for £800 cheaper would you believe?! If there's a wedding fayre on locally you might find something similar there discounted. Good luck, and beautiful dress! (And socks!!)
