Wedding dresses - is everything strapless? with Flashes

21 May, 2012 at 09:32 Posted on Planning 0 33

So I really should be doing some work on this monday morning, but I got response from a post last night and it has got me thinking. I don't plan to do dress shopping until Sep this year, but I love looking thorugh the millions of bridal magazines from my cousin for inspiration. However, I find that when I am flicking through them there are hardly any dresses I want to try on. I am not exactly blessed in the boob department and so I am not overly keen on the thought of a strapless dress, but 90% of bridal dresses seem to be strapless. Also I know that there are a lot of lace dresses out there now with straps which I do like, but I know for fact that my other half is not a lace fan, so it leaves me a little stuck.

I seem to just be left with the grecian style chiffon dresses, which I do love, but if I try these on and hate them, then what?

So anyone else tried on a non-lace and non- strapless dress and cares to share some inspirtaion with me?

P.S Would also quite like a bit of a train (sp?) - Fussy much

P.P.S I know this may all change when I go and actually try them on.

These are the ones I like so far:

If there is a strapless dress you like you could always add some cap sleeves to it or something? I'm sure there have been lots of flashes on here with non-strapless non-lace weddings dresses...have you looked at that huge thread which is probably a few pages down now but there are so many different dresses on there.

I think I posted on your other thread, mine is Alfred Angelo 1148 - no lace, not strapless and has a train.

I agree - have just got engaged and am determined not to have a strapless dress. Although won;t completely rule them out when trying on dresses as you never know.

I wouldn't rule out anything (even lace) - try on everything and see what happens.

Definitely this! You can have straps of some sort added to almost all strapless dresses, so don't rule them out completely when you try them on. In my first dress shop, I basically picked out the ones which had straps (there weren't many), regardless of what the rest of the dress looked like. After a few which weren't very inspiring, the assistant offered to pick out a few. Hers were all strapless, but in a shape which far better suited my body type, and she played around with various bits of ribbon and lace to see what straps/cap sleeves would look like.

Go in with an open mind - you might be surprised at what you look good in!

The first thing to say is b*llox to this, he'll absolutely love whatever you wear and I'll be surprised if he has a clear enough idea of what a lacy dress can be to have a definite opinion on them.

My dress had cap sleeves in an edged tulle, which I don't think counts as lacy (excuse rictus grin, not sure what my dad is going to say next, not one for the album!)?

I agree with others, don't rule out strapless (or lace) because you can get a lovely dress modified slightly into your dream dress! I loved a strapless dress I tried in the first shop, but the more I tried in other places the more I decided I definitely wanted cap sleeves. We went back to the first shop and I nearly hugged the lady when she said they could have little cap sleeves made from what is taken off the hem! She denonstrated what it would look like with some spare fabric, and it was perfect! You should just try everything, even lace!

My dress is a V neckline (D'Zage D9250). Has a lowish V back and buttons all the way down the back onto the train.

For some reason the image from teh front won't upload, but here's the back view!

I have a very simple satin strapless gown with a small train - but it has a lace long sleeved coat that can be worn over it and has 5 buttons that do up at the front. it's a bit similar to Kate middletons (BUT I HAD IT FIRST!) lol sorry sore spot

I also browsed loads of magazines and didnt see a single dress I liked - and I went to 2 bridal shops tried on about 50 dresses in total and the one I got was the only one I actually picked out and it was love at first sight ?

Mine fits your criteria although its lace (Allure 8825). I had the same dilemma as you in my OH doesn't like lace, but he does like my style so on me I think he will be surprised (hope so!)

If you like Maggie, have a look at Autumn. It has straps and no lace in sight!

I tried on lace but it didn't suit me and I was adament I wanted straps, there are dresses out there but I agree that the majority seem to be strapless. My dress was Pronovias and they do have a lot of dresses with straps, mine also had a train but not to much of one. See below:

    and this was the front

Charlotte Balbier and Cymbeline (Sp?) do some lovely lacey numbers with straps. Were a bit out of my price range too. Mine has straps too as I was determined not to go strapless. Any excuse for a flash...

I'm wearing the Ronald Joyce Livia, which is not lacy and has a strap made of silk flowers:

It also has a really lovely train, with sparkly bits in it. I can't wait to wear it.

    Good luck with your search!

Love these ones!! I'm getting married July 2013 and am obsessed with one-shouldered wedding dresses - I think they're far more flattering than strapless which can be really unforgiving on people like me with broad shoulders! Try Romona Keveza - she has some amazing one-shouldered dresses x

I tried on 3066 by Impression...can't flash as I'm on my phone but its a satin halterneck. I was going to buy it until I fell in love with a strapless princess dress (which was not at all what I thought I wanted, but you can't help who you fall in love with!!)

    No straps at all and all covered up! I couldn't have my shoulders on show so finding a dress that covered me up was the main priority;

I have the same problem as you and have never been able to pull off a strapless dress. Even all the shop assistants and my friends agreed when I was trying on the dresses. You are right though, 90% of the dresses ARE strapless which is really annoying. I lost count of the number of women in the shop I was in that were complaining about this too! I know you can add straps to dresses but I think the ones that are designed with straps are best. Here is my dress

Mine has lace detailing on the top but the main part of the dress is organza and satin.

    It's by Essense of Australia
