Wedding Dresses - Keep or Sell?

JackieS, 13 April, 2010 at 18:42 Posted on Planning 0 21

Don't think this topic has been done in a little while....just wondering if people are planning on keeping or selling their dresses after? (plus it might act as an excuse to flash a dress?)

I got mine second hand (although it was unworn) and only paid £250 for it instead of the £750 I was quoted in the shop.....by the look of ebay I probably wouldn't make back what I paid for it despite the dropped price, so I'm not sure whether I'll bother or not

I think I'd sell mine as I have no particular emotional attachment to it. I'm fed up with gathering stuff I can't throw away (that's why we're not having a guest book). I'm short though, so my dress won't have mass appeal. Also, if it costs too much to dry clean I might just do what my friends have - screw it up in a binliner and shove it in their parents' attic.

Hmm. Tough one! I'd love to say I'd keep it to pass onto any daughters I may have but (a) I'm marrying a giant (and I am teeny), so the chances of any of my kids fitting into my clothes are zilch and (b) it'll probably be so unfashionable when they are the right age that I wouldn't wish it on them.... ? On the other hand, it would be nice to make some money back, but as my dress is being made bespoke for me rather than a standard design, I doubt that there will be much demand for it. So, not sure yet. I think I'll probably sell my shoes though!

Fancy free - a friend of mine didn't want to pay large amounts for dry cleaning so she actually put hers in the washing machine. Just put it in a duvet cover and stuck it on delicate 0- worked for her!

    Keeping mine!! ?

That's the beauty of not buying a very expensive shop dress. God knows what i'll do with it mind, but i'll keep it anyway!

My Mam cut hers up and made me a fairy costume for a school play ?

I plan on having the fabric of the skirt used in a christening gown once we have a baby (Thats ONE baby - not babies! Only doing it once....).

Maybe then I can get the top corset part altered so that I can just wear it as a corset style top. xx

Mine was only £200 - sample sale, so will probably consider donating it to a Charity Shop or something - if it had cost a lot more then I would have either kept it or sold it.

Mind will only do this months after the wedding, may still want to get it out afterwards and parade around the house in it (or maybe not, two Springer Spaniels would have a field day with the train!!! and god knows what the cat would try to do)

I couldn't imagine ever getting rid of mine. I'd box it up and keep it. I appreciate it'd probably sit in the loft for years on end but I'd like the thought it was there.

Still got mine from over 2 years ago, it's in its cover hung up in my wardrobe.....not even dry cleaned! ?

I thought I'd sell it but there's no way I can, I feel a bit too sentimental about it.

It's a personal choice, I know plenty of people who have sold their dresses and a few who have kept them.

Mine wasn't expensive, so I doubt I would get much for it if I sold it. Might donate it as someone else says. Then someone else could get good use out of it. Right now, I don't think I would want to keep it - but who knows after?

Erhum... you could buy raffle tickets and do one of the trash the dress / rock the frock sessions that are on offer!

I'm in 2 minds about selling my dress afterwards, the practical side of me says yes as I could probably get a decent chunk of change out of it, and plus we don't have enough room to store it in our little flat at the moment. But then the sentimental side of me says no, as it will have so many memories attached to it, I love the idea of showing it to any future daughters etc and letting them play dress up in it, and plus we could always store it at my parents house until we buy a house!

Then on the other hand I think the thought of another bride having her special day in it is quite nice too. Hmmm I honestly don't know, I'll have to see how I feel in a few months time!

I don't think I'd do a rock the frock thing or trash the dress though. Not entirely sure why, just don't think I'd feel comfortable at the possibility of damaging it?! ?

I used to absolutely love dressing up in my mum's wedding dress. Even though it was a huge maternity tent thing from Littlewoods (she was 8 months pregnant with me when she married) it didn't matter. I think seeing your daughter(s) playing about in it would be lovely. As I already have two sons and don't think I want anymore children mine is going from this:

    to this:

This conversation came up at work the other day neither me or my friend can bear to get rid of our dresses even tho it isnt something I am ever going to wear again and is just going to collect dust in the wadrobe, my mum asked me if I was going to sell it only a week after!!

I bought mine 2nd hand from ebay, and as i'm not sentimental about it (and don't have the space to store it), it'll go back on ebay after the big day!

I'd def consider the possibility of "rock the frock"! Posing around in my lovely dress again!
