Wedding emergency

Coco90, 6 September, 2012 at 14:31 Posted on Planning 0 29

Hi, going to see the Superintendent Registrar at Swindon Council today to hopefully book our wedding at the registry office there. One little problem, though. We are both UK nationals and so are our parents but apparently if you were born after 1983 and don't have a valid passport (which my fiance doesn't) you need your mum's birth certificate as well as your own. We aren't speaking to his mum at the moment so getting her certificate is and was out of the question. What the heck do i do?! Our birth certificates say where our folks were born but this law after 1983 says that's not enough. Help please!!!!

I hadn't heard of this! I'd take his Dad's certificate instead, and hope that would suffice. What if his Mum was dead? What if she had lost her certificate? Asking for this isn't really practical is it?

I'd just ring them and ask/explain.

Go to the Register of Births Deaths and marriages on the website online (it ends with gov.uk) and order it. It will cost you around £8.00 and you can order a copy of anyones birth certificate as long as you know their details

Can your fiance get himself a passport organised? They can do them same day - it costs more money, but might resolve this situation?

I'm sure you can request a copy of your mother's birth certificate as long as you have proof of your relationship...i've done a quick google and you definitely can in America, i'm sure i've heard of it in this country as well though - sorry i cant google more extensively at the moment!

How difficult is it to get a passport? Surely that would be the answer?

Thank you for the advice, guys. He refuses to get a passport on principal because he says they're a waste of money. Just going to have to explain over the phone. Not paying a £10 fee to see the registrar just to get turned away. Really wanted to book today as well. Smiley sad

Well I suppose they are if you never want to leave the UK! What about you though, don't you want to see some other countries at some point?

Does he have a driving licence?

You really can just order it online from that website. I use it all the time in my job. As long as you know the date of birth and name it's fine. It's not that expensive either

Looking into ordering his mum's certificate. He's got driving license and I'm just thinking that I might just go ahead with the appointment and see if they'll take our other stuff (utility bills, birth certificates, driving license etc.) They surely can't need all that AND his mum's stuff. It says where our parents were born on our certificates. If not, I'll order her certificate. Thanks

Eh? £80 to let you travel the world is too much money?

Why not just ring them instead of potentially wasting everyone's time?

My sister went to give notice 2 weeks ago and couldn't find her passport (she has recently moved house) My mum has never seen her own birth certficate (complicated reasons)

The registrars themselves did background investigation in the archives. Can't recall if it cost her anything but she just popped back for another appointment this sat just gone and it was all sorted. They had traced my mum's cert. Although my mum discovered from this that her parents were not actually married when she was born. Cringe moment! Cue me calling my mum Illegitimate all day. Luckily mum saw the funny side!

    Don't panic!

Are you wearing stockings? (for wedding, not right now, lol). Could you not wear a waspie suspender belt? Or just a waspie?

They can be a bit lenient - ring them and ask. When we went, we were supposed to have proof that H2B had been in the country for more than 9 days (he lives in Germany) , and we were supposed to have the letter confirming our appointment in his name to prove that he was staying in the district. We didn't have either of these, and seeing as they took the payment at the beginning of the meeting before asking us any questions or checking our documents, they had to just go ahead with it anyway! xx

Sorry to hijack but I'm literally crying with laughter here, as I was just imagining the scene:

"Hi, we're here to give notice, we're not sure we have all the documentation, but will these suspenders / waspie suffice?"

I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago (it got lost after various house moves) and I think including rush delivery it cost me just under £25 from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Its the same for children applying for passports - I had to send lots of stuff when we applied for my son's passport as he was born after 1983. I was told by the passport office that after 31st Dec 1983 children born in the UK are not automatically British citizens anymore, its done by virtue of parentage (and possibly more than that, but thats what they said)

They were fine about it all thank God. They're really lovely at the Swindon Civic offices. That'll teach me for letting my mum wind me up with all her worries! Also, finally convinced my Mr to get a passport!! I'm not budging on going to Paris for our honeymoon.
