wedding gift question please help

christa554, 10 May, 2013 at 11:26 Posted on Planning 0 10

I have a quick question on gift giving. Our friend's son is getting married. We aren't invited to the wedding, and didn't expect to be. We don't know the groom well, although socialise with the parents quite a bit. He's older and lives abroad, and have only met him a few times. Anyway, I wanted to give a card and small monetary gift anyway, as we do know him and are friends with the parents, just to wish them well. My husband said not to do it, that they will think it will make them feel bad for not inviting us. Now, I'm not from the UK, so maybe it's a social convention that I don't understand here or my husband is talking out his a***.

Brides/grooms, would you feel bad if you received a gift in this situation? I don't want to step on any toes. Thanks so much for helping!

This bit made me laugh! :-)

I think I'd just feel extremely flattered and pleased if somebody did that for me and my OH so I'd say go with your instincts. Absolutely lovely gesture!

I agree with the above. My mum also gives cards and gifts to friends children when not attending their wedding.

    I would be very touched.

We had small sums of money from people who weren't invited. Mainly, actually, all, were from friends of parents.

Exactly this. We received several £10 vouchers for standard shops (Argos/Post Office/etc) and the odd vase, all from my parents' friends.
