Wedding Gifts- how much?

Skeptical78, 5 June, 2013 at 10:53 Posted on Planning 0 14

I want to buy gifts for some key members of the wedding party for their contribution to helping us with the wedding, both financially and through offering to provide things for free.

Thing is, we're on a limited budget and it's getting ever more squeezed the nearer we get; I have no idea how much people spend on these things?!

I would like to get gifts for:

My mum & dad (seperate)
OHs mum and dad (together)
2 bridesmaids
Best Man
Auntie who made all the napkins
Cousin who is helping us with photos
Friend who is doing my hair
Brother who has sorted (and is!) the band

We've currently budgeted about £400 but I'm trying to cut back a bit on things. How much would you recommend spending on each? Any creative ideas how I could get something more meaningful for less cost? Credit cards, etc. are not an option- I refuse to get into debt!!

I'm almost considering getting knocked up before the wedding; that would be the biggest present my mum and dad could have. They're DESPERATE to have a grandkid. Might work out a bit more pricey in the long run though..... ?

hahahahaha.....................don't do it! Will definitely be more pricey! Here I go again, but take a look at my site.............if there is anything you like the look of or want me to find out more info or things in a similar style let me know. Don't buy off the site though, get in touch first so that I can organise a better price for you!

You know- I agree with this, and I'm sure my dad would say exactly the same! In fact, if he even knew I was on here asking the question, he'd probably tell me to stop being so ridiculous!

I do want to get them something though, to show my gratitude. ?

We were (are) really limited too, budget wise and there were several people I wanted to buy for.

Our 3 teenage daughters and teenage son will be given gifts after the wedding, as soon as I can afford it- my son keeps talking about nice watches so that is what we will get him. As for the 3 girls, we were thinking along the lines of a locket or something each that they can keep. But like I say, even though they all have significant roles in the day, they will have to wait.

    What I HAVE bought:

My sister (making cake) a lovely decorative incense burner she has had her eye on for ages. Had it made into a lovely gift basket with various packets of incense sticks. £15.

My mum and step dad (funding alot) a bespoke wildlife friendly gift pack- 3 tree saplings and some bee/butterfly friendly shrubs. £25.

My dad- engraved and filled hip flask.

OHs dad (best man) is a massive tea fan... Got him a yorkshire dialect/ phrases mug. £12.

OHs 2 sisters (witnesses) Yankee Candle decorative votive holders with Wedding Day candles plus extra votives. About £10 each.

TOG friend a mini engraved and filled hip flask. (He is getting paid anyway)

MUA friend a hanging double heart ornament and a personalised bag charm. Around £15.

Youngest daughter (fg) a personalised teddy and a Summer fairy book she has been wanting. £15.

They are all low budget items but we took time to choose things all recipients will really appreciate.

That old saying it's the thought that counts really is true IMO xx

That's what I'm thinking. Personally, I'd rather have a thoughtful, unique gift than a bunch of old tack which cost a pretty penny.

Think I'm going to head back to Etsy for some inspiration!

How about a really nice photo & frame of you with each person, so its really personal, and something individual too. If you haven't got those pics, why not get your TOG to take some on the day, then you can send them after?

I think I'm going to get our parents a plant / tree (something that will last) that they can plant in their garden and keep for a long time.

Both sets love their pretty gardens and its something reasonably priced too as like everyone else has said, they have helped massively so don't want to spend cash stupidly when it could have helped reduce the amount they contributed!

I would just get them a bottle of booze each and write a really nice card/letter saying how much you appreciate their help.

    We had:

Mums - lovely flowers (presented in a bag) arranged by the florist - £35 each. We didn't get anything for my dad, honestly, the best present for him just the day itself ("the second best wedding I've ever been to, and the first was mine to your mum")

    Best Man (H's brother) - A voucher for a clay pigeon shoot day with H - £50

Bridesmaid (my sister) - A puzzle (she loves puzzles!), a photo albumn of pics of us together - cost around £20 (I did then take her for a spa day and meal but that was extra and she was such a massive help to us with the planning and organising).

One of my best friends did a reading and another made some cakes for us for our sweetie table so I got them both a photo frame and put in a picture of us together at my hen do - cost around £8 each. These went down really well.

How about DIYing something personal for them? Depends on what they're like as people I think, and what you think they might like to receive.

*Official Etsy warning* it's both often quite pricey equivalents of stuff you can make at home and you might get carried away like a crazy person
