Wedding insurance - who to go with?

bride2b84, 7 February, 2012 at 18:38 Posted on Planning 0 9

I am looking at Wedding insurance and I have no idea who to go with!

Most of the companies I have found online I have never heard of so is it best to stick with Debenhams/John Lewis and pay a bit more?

Does anyone have any recommendations?

We are planning to go with Eccliesiastical. They also do home insurance, insurance for churches and charities. A friend recommended them and I found they were the best priced for what you get. I think the package we are going with is about 130 quid. When I was researching it, I think Debenhams and John Lewis were about 50 quid more for the same coverage.

We were told not to bother with wedding insurance, it only really covers yourself and H2B (we are the biggest risk in a wedding). If a venue goes bust then you're not covered. A colleague suggested to only pay deposits on venues / photography etc and pay the full amount when its due that way you don't lose any money if they run off with your money. Hope this makes sense!

I think it depends on the package you get. I know with the one we are looking at we get loads of coverage for all different possibilities from the venue going bust, to the wedding having to be cancelled due to illness or death, to the rings getting lost etc. Most of our full payments are due a month before the wedding. Even though nothing is likely to go wrong in the last few weeks, with all the money we're spending, £100 for coverage is worth it in my opinion. You just never know - you hear stories all the time of wedding disasters. Just make sure to read all the fine print and ask questions of whoever you purchase it through to make sure you understand what is covered and what isn't.

We went with John Lewis, it covers more than just myself and h2b, it covers us if other trades cancel aswell. Well worth it in my opinion.

I really don't think whoever told you this have given the best advice. Even if you and H2B were the only 'risk factors' you have no idea what might happen before the wedding - God forbid but one of you could be involved in an accident, or lose a close family member leading to you cancelling - you'd lose all your money if that happend.

There are plenty of packages out there that DO cover companies/suppliers going bust and it really is worth getting cover. You'd get it for a holiday and you don't spend anywhere near as much time or money on most holidays as you do on a wedding. Insurance should be the first thing you organise and pay for.
