Wedding license, confused

Sarah5790, 18 June, 2014 at 19:30 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi

Sorry if this is a stupid question just i'm confused with the whole process. We are getting married at a church and our vicar had said we don't have to give notice as with it being a church ceremony you get the banns read instead which I understand. However what do you do about a wedding license do I still need to apply/get one and where from? Am I meant to apply/get one before the wedding or after?

    Hi,

I'm getting married in a church to. My priest never mentioned anything about a license until a couple of weeks ago and YES you do need to go to your town hall pay a fee and give notice. You should do it at least 12 weeks before your wedding too make sure you get your license in time. If you don't have a license or blue form as my priest calls it he wouldn't be able too marry us. Xx

Edited - just seen prev response - I thought the vicar did it for oyu but maybe not. I'd check with the vicar hun. It might be different for different churches etc.

For my first marriage this was all sorted out by the priest, the only thing we needed was the 4 consecutive weeks of the banns being read

    From gov.uk

You don’t usually need to give notice with the register office if you’re getting married in an Anglican church. Officials performing Anglican marriages will register your marriage.

I would call your vicar and check too be on the safe side then. Sorry if I have confused you!

I'm getting married in a Catholic church. My priest is known for giving short notice to couples too get their license as I first thought the church sorted it out until the other week he asked if I had got our license! We get our license next week luckily as we get married in 6 weeks Smiley smile Xx

If you are getting married in the Church of England, you don't need to give notice, the banns reading takes the place of that. You will get your marriage certificate (is that what you mean by wedding licence?) after signing the register during your ceremony.
