wedding planner?

kayli, 16 February, 2011 at 17:18 Posted on Planning 0 5

HI,

I was just wondering if anyone knows if it's better to organise everything myself, or to hire a wedding planner to help? We are hoping to get married in July 2013 as I will be starting my final year at university this year and so would be too stressed to plan the wedding for sooner.

Any infomation would be great, thanks!

Depends on your budget and how much control you want?

    Hi and welcome,

I agree with this but also whether you think you will enjoy it. I have loved doing all the research and planning. But i know there are some on here who really dont like it. Sorry that's not very helpful but it really is personal (and financial) preference.

    Hello,

I would say it depends on how well you feel you can bring your ideas to reality, you can still be very actively involved with a planner, its just they will know very quickly where to go to make your dreams a reality, without you having to trawl the internet for hours, lots of B2B enjoy this part I know, but you may not, or may not have the time to trawl.

A good planner will save you your fees back in supplier discounts, as the ones I work with really squeeze me!

Alternantively find a supplier that you are happy with, your florist/tog/venue and ask them for their recommendations.

    Take care

    Zoe xx

I was reading an article on the BBC website yesterday that said a wedding planner is only really value for money if you're going to spend more than £40K, because they make up for their 15% cut with the discounts they negotiate for you. Personally I think it's just an added expense at a time when most people are trying to make their money go as far as possible, so I suppose it depends how much you hate doing that kind of thing and how much it's worth to you to get someone else to do it (and bear in mind that anyone can set themselves up as a wedding planner, so you're not guaranteed to be happy with the outcome).

This describes the worst practice... Some wedding planners charge a fixed fee, others seem to charge between 10-15%. Some take a cut from suppliers, some don't

Needless to say, if you find one that charges a fixed agreed fee, and passes all savings on to you, and takes on cuts from suppliers, they very quickly save you a lot of money

If you find a wedding planner that works on a percentage, and takes no cuts from suppliers you end up with someone who is working for you, and not themselves... They have no incentive to find expensive suppliers or "up the price". Instead they can then concentrate on excellence and value

Forgetting the money, the real value of a wedding planner is that you have peace of mind, reduced stress, and you have someone with "the knowledge" on your side
