Wedding Planner

flipflop20, 23 June, 2011 at 09:14 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi all,

I am considering starting an event planning business, however I am concerned as to if there is a demand for Wedding Planning. I live in South Somerset, and have had previous experience working within co-ordination of weddings on the day! I am a good organiser and feel I would be good at Event planning.

What I would like to know from you is:

1) Would you hire a wedding planner to help you?

2) What would you want the wedding planner to do?

3) How much would you consider reasonable for the service?

4) Any other comments you feel will help me with my research

For me its not something i would consider. I think there is a whole heap of fun and pleasure out of planning your own wedding, however, saying that for people that have little time on their hands it would be a perfect solution. Cant really help with prices im afraid.

Whereabouts? I spent the first 25 years of my life in Chard Smiley smile

In response to your question, I think Vikster has it nailed really, wedding planning - although quite stressful - is a very important part of the run up to your big day, and between the two people involved it gives a good way to bond and get used to working as a unit rather than two people.

Personally I don't think we would have employed a wedding planner even if one had been really really cheap, mostly because we felt it important to make it our day, rather than just letting someone else deal with all the stuff.

For someone very busy, or no good with planning, or having no idea where to start, then I can see the use of a wedding planner - but then again, with Hitched, you have something like 500 other people going through the same things as you are you can learn from and share stuff with so it's like a free service almost.

I think wedding planning can take many different levels; some people just need a little extra help like venue dressing on the day, others need help finding certain suppliers, others just want to give you some money and please organise everything for me, just tell me where to be and when to be there.

Something you do need to consider though is your competition - are there many other people within say 100 mile radius doing similar things to what you're planning (Sherrie of this site for example is in the Bristol area) as Business 101 tells you that entering a saturated market with nothing unique is likely to fail.

Good luck anyway if you do decide to go ahead - as I'm sure it can be a very enjoyable and rewarding job.

I am a Wedding Planner and have been for the last 20 years. Like any other wedding business there is no much demand for this service now due to the recession etc. so I would seriously think again about it if you expect to make a living out of just doing this service.

I think you're in the wrong place to be asking those questions. Generally speaking, busy people who don't have time or don't like organising things will hire a wedding planner. You're probably not going to find those sorts of people on a wedding planning forum.

As the name states I also work as a wedding planner. The actual planning business isnt great at the moment but then again we dont advertise as just planners. We help find those missing suppliers or weird choices some couples may be struggling to find. We also work on getting people the best quote for something they really want. Most people want to plan their own wedding so we just help them along the way. Planning your own wedding is all part of the fun and excitement.

The coordination is a great service as mostly we just take over on the day. The bride and groom know all the hard work is their own but dont have to worry or have any hassle on the day. Great if the Bestman is a little unreliable (as some can be).

Concider what services you could offer and also as stated before check out your local area for any competition.

This business is npt as straight forward and wonderful as many think it is.

I chose not to have a planner as I was not working and had time to get stuck in and a friend of mine is a wedding planner so was able to give me lots of free tips!. Speaking of said friend, she has a booming business but doesn't just focus on weddings as she does parties, corporate events, etc. However, she has been doing so for 15 years and has built up her reputation. It started as a job on the side when she worked in PR and from that she had made some good contacts. I think location plays an important part in how successful your company would be too. Good luck if you decide to go ahead though!
