Wedding reception near Welwyn Garden City, Herts.

CLAIREYFAIRY2, 27 May, 2010 at 13:22 Posted on Planning 0 18

Hi All!

I've just started the search for a wedding reception venue. I am getting married in May 2012, a long way away I know, but I have been scared by trouble my friend had getting a venue 18 months ahead of hers so have decided to start looking now!!

I am getting married at a church in Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire and need to find a reception venue within about 20mins of there. Can anyone recommend any good venues as there isn't much in Welwyn Garden City itself.

Because I wanted something a little more relaxed and different I have been looking at some marquee venues such as Walkern Hall, but am surprised that it costs £2k to hire the grounds then about £3k to hire the marquee before you've fed and watered anyone. I assumed that if you had to coordinate the caterers marquee etc yourself it might be a little cheaper.

Our budget for the reception is about £8k, any ideas welcome!!!

Welcome to hitched ? Here are some ideas:

When I was looking for a venue, my sister put our post code into the Late Rooms website and looked for hotels within 15 miles or so. Then we went to their websites, saw if they did weddings and went from there. Hope that helps!

Thank you, I hadn't thought of Mill Green Golf Club, I'll call them! Does anyone know what its like?

I'm waiting for the Node to call me back as that looks like a possibility. I have a feeling Coltsfoot might be too expensive, I got hold of their 2010 pricelist and it'll be at least £15k according to that.

My head bridesmaid had her wedding at Tewin, and my mum used to work there so doesn't want me to have it there!!

    Anymore ideas would be welcome!

Have you looked at the Spirella Ballroom in Letchworth?

That might fit your brief re relaxed and different.

Hi we got married at the county suite/county hall in 2007, i am not sure if they still do weddings there though. We were able to have our own caterers too.

The Bush Hall hotel on the border with Hatfield and WGC is always worth checking out.

How many guests do you have?

Which church are you marrying at???<nosey icon>

As also commented on this thread, I would also strongly recommend the Node. Possibly a bit far, although excellent. If you do want to travel a little, there are literally dozens more excellent venues.

I must admit that I find Tewin a bit lacking.....although I am on my own on this one. I recall the times when the catering was self catering there....how times have changed....and how they ruined the paddock area to build a link road.......I guess that I don't buy in to the multi wedding venue concept....

That said, Fanhams is my favourite Herts venue (possibly because one of my shots is the most used wedding images of the venue on the web) Ironically the sequence I shot there was curtailed by a thunderstorm although we made the most of the dry window of opportunity.

Actually, another venue not a million miles from WGC is 3 Lakes. It gets very very good reviews. It is between WGC and Ware although closer to the latter.

Maxine, the organiser there is very good.....It is also, being a newish venue, quite competitively priced....

The building isn't a good as Tewinbury although it is located on the side of a valley overlooking.....er well....3 lakes...

You're not alone in your feelings about Tewin Bury - it's usually referred to as The Wedding Factory because of the 4 weddings at a time going on there! I'm not a huge fan of Fanhams as I've never found them very professional on the day of a wedding.

For the couple and me in the gardens though, we have no issues with the venue...we are on our own in a great wonderland......if given the time.....

Mind you, the venue did change ownership twice in quick succession. That may have affected their approach as it went from a Sainsburys owned training venue to a corporately owned Hotel.

I should also add that Tewinbury have always been good to me as I have known them and worked with them for so long. I always get offered free food at no cost to the couple and have a great relationship with the organisers...plus the added bonus of it being under the Herts registrars that I also know very well. Photographically though, the venue can lack options, specifically when they have 4 weddings on the go and areas are restricted to keep the couples apart

Thanks guys, I went to see a few venues at the weekend, and my favourite so far is Hanbury Manor in Ware, its above our original budget but we loved it and can strecth to that!! I am also going to go and see Hatfield House, Sopwell House and The Node the weekend after next though to see what they are like... just in case I prefer them, but I am in love with Hanbury Manor at the moment!!

I've ruled Tewin out as my MOH had her wedding there. I went to 3 Lakes at the weekend and it was really nice, but I don't think there is enough inside place if the older people want to get away from the disco in the evening.

Hanbury Manor is lovely although can be a bit shambolic! (see my blog on the subject: http://wedding-wonders.blogspot.com/2010/03/my-day-at-hanbury-manor-wedding-salon.html )

Tewin Bury have always provided excellent service whenever I've co-ordinated weddings there, but I just don't like the multi-wedding venues. I have the same issues with Sopwell, particularly some of their function suites where people walk through your private bar to get to another function!
