Wedding Ring Question

melissamatthew, 11 October, 2010 at 22:43 Posted on Planning 0 4

My beloved grandmother died just under two years ago, and sadly will not be able to see me marry. She was 89 and had been with my grandfather (now 92) since they were 16. We were very very close, and I miss her everyday.

Her wedding ring was 18ct yellow gold, and mum suggested I use it as a wedding ring. However, my engagement ring is 18ct white gold, and we would like to have white gold wedding rings each. I also understand you shouldn't have two different types of gold next to each other, as they rub.

A jeweller friend said that he could cover the yellow gold ring to make a white gold ring out of it, but that often the covering does not last if the ring is worn constantly (ie, during washing up etc). I also, am not sure whether I'd want to change her wedding ring - it would seem odd altering it. However, I would love to wear her ring every day, it would be very special for me to be able to do this.

Does anyone have experience of altering a family piece in such a manner, or alternative ideas?

Tricky, if it was me, I wouldn't want to cover it up with another gold or alter it in anyway. White gold is (I think) softer than yellow gold, so you could end up causing damage.

I have my gran's wedding ring, but I wear it on my thumb (gran had arthritus so her ring was massive) - could you wear your grandmother's ring on another finger or on your other hand? Failing that, could you wear it on a necklace? A work colleage does this with her deceased husband's wedding ring.

I may be being a bit thick, but i didn't think there was a thing such as white gold? And that white gold literally is yellow gold dipped in Rhodium plating? Which would be exactly like what you were wanting to do?

Might be worth asking a jewlers for their option, but it does depend on whether you'd want to change how it looks?

I have my aunties engagement ring which is yellow gold but I never wear it as my ER / necklaces etc are white gold. I wish i'd had it made into my ER now as it is just locked away in my jewelry box.

I don't have any experience with rings, but I do have a watch that was pass down from my uncle. I would think that the value of the ring is sentimental in nature. What your grandmother left you is precious as it is. Adding covering only beautifies it asthetically. If you really want to ehance it, why not go with engravings instead?

Thanks all for your replies. I am also inclined to not alter the ring, as it's a sentimental piece... I would just love to wear it day-to-day!

I am visiting my grandfather this weekend in the UK (just the two of us, we're going to Hull Fair together!) and ask his opinion. I think wearing it as a necklace would be a nice idea also.

Have you thought about adding some yellow gold to your engagement ring as opposed to altering your grandmother's ring? I would take a look at some of these two tone wedding rings and see if you find any inspiration.
