Wedding Rings....

sara.jo, 26 August, 2010 at 13:43 Posted on Planning 0 16

Hi girlies,

Just a little help if anyone can shed any advice really..

Myself and my fiance went to the jewellers that he bought my engagement ring on Tuesday. There is a wedding band that matches my engagement ring but when I got it on it didnt fit snugly next to it. Due to the setting of my stone, there is a gap between the two. The lady said it would be minimal once the ring is my correct size but I still am not sure. I have noticed that you can have a ring made to fit your engagement ring (although you have to leave them your ER, stress!) where you have a bit cut our of the wedding band. I asked the lady about this but she was anti that, and said you would still have a gap....

Any ideas? And also any places that people would recommend (Im in Essex but work in London so either or the surrounding areas is fine). I also saw on a previous post that people have reccomended "Smooch" - they come to your house. Are they good? Or does anyone know any other jewellers that are good?

My engagement ring is Platinum and the wedding band that matches it is £580 (3mm, just a plain band). That seems a lot to me. My fiance has been quoted £1085 - £1200 for his! Thats for a 5mm band. Is it me, or is that a lot of wonga?!

Any help is massively appreciated - I dont have a clue, and dont want to get ripped off.

Thanks xxx

I am having my wedding ring made to fit around my engagement ring as it's a funny shape - its being made of white gold and has diamonds in it and is only a few hundred pounds more than yours. The downside of course is - no engagement ring for a while, but i'd rather than than risk ruining it by having the two rings rubbing over time.

As for OH - I'm sure you could get cheaper. A fellow hitcher recommended Quality Diamonds, who have a Hatton Garden office - I found them reasonable for a plain band (£380 for a palladium band, with some patterned ridge inserted, £320 without the ridge) but expensive for diamond rings so in the end we didn't go with them, but I was impressed with the service.

    Hi Sara.Jo

Just to give you a little info on Smooch... I have checked our most recent price list, and we can certainly beat the prices you have been quoted. We do offer a price promise (we will refund the difference if you find the same ring cheaper elsewhere within 7 days) as well.

Appointments are completely no obligation, and you are free to browse our rings as long as you like.

Have you considered having palladium rings? Palladium is the same quality and finish as platinum, but at a fraction of the cost! For example, with Smooch, a Man's 5mm standard weight platinum ring is £720, where as the same ring in palladium is only £285. As you can see, that is a huge saving!

All of our rings are guaranteed for life, so if they ever need re-sizing, polishing, re-plating (white gold), we will do this for you free of charge.

Hope that helps a bit, just shout if there's anything else you'd like to know ?

    Laura x

    Thanks Laura, thats really helpful...

Why is palladium so much cheaper? Would I be able to have palladium next to my platinum engagement ring or do you mean just for my fiance?

Is there a charge for an appointment?

    Thanks again,

    Hi

Cant really help with your other questions but I have a 3mm platinum wedding ring and that was selling for £650 luckily we know someone who works in a jewellers and got a nice little discount on that! So yes for a good quality platinum ring I'd say you are looking around the £500 plus mark.

    Hi Sara,

Rather than have a shaped wedding ring I had a bit of the clasp of the stone on my engagement ring removed so i could wear a flat band. Not sure if you'll be able to do this with yours but I really didn't want a shaped wedding band so this was the perfect option, maybe something to think about if it's possible. It now fits snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug.x

    No problem ?

As for being cheaper, without going into too much detail and boring the socks off you, palladium is 40% ligher than platinum, so whilst it is the same quality, durability and strength as platinum, it weighs less, and jewellery metal is bought by weight.

Palladium and platinum sit together perfectly, you absolutely would not be able to tell the difference at all.

There's no charge or obligation for an appointment with Smooch. We give you some free gifts for allowing us into your home, whether you choose to buy with us or not.

Also, I can offer you free engraving for the inside of your ring if you want it (normal price is £25 per ring), you could have something like your wedding date inscribed, I always think this is a lovely touch, and means your h2b has no excuse for forgetting your anniversary! ? You'd need to email me for a code to get this offer though (**@***********.****)

Jay's Jeweller's, Hatton Garden. They take your engagement ring, and match it exactly. They give you a receipt for your ER and had mine less than a fortnight. Our rings aren't platinum, so I can't say what it would come to but for my shaped 18ct yellow, and hubby's 9ct white gold 4mm it came to £500, including the shaping.

Wow I am glad you posted this.

OHs ring is being made as we speak in palladium but I have ordered white gold - if there is no difference between the white gold and palladium I may request the same when I order mine to match...

    Glad to help!

I personally always recommend palladium as it's far better value for money, and doesn't need to be re-plated

I had mine made and had the shape of my E - ring cut out and it fits perfectly. Went to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham.

Palladium definitely sounds like an option! Laura - I will send you an email for the engraving thing as I would like this done - such a nice touch. I may put something lovey dovey and squirmy in my OH's so he doesnt take it off! ?

Palladium next to my platinum engagement ring won't scratch it or anything will it? ?

There will always be natural wear and tear when you put two rings next to each other, regardless of what metal you use. But no, the scratching won't be any worse than if you had white gold.

And, as I said, we will re-polish your rings at any time for free, so those little scratches can be easily removed ?
