wedding rings

MrsKeating2B, 7 September, 2010 at 11:19 Posted on Planning 0 12

Morning ladies..

My hubby to be wants a plain 9ct white gold wedding band (hes a body builder and cant wear one training) so a nice one would be wasted cuz he wont wear it :/

soo my question is.. What is the difference between a 9ct white gold 5mm band in F.hinds for example for £150...

Or the same spec ring in tescos i have seen.. for £75...? my thought was if a ring is 9ct white gold.. and is same size, shape ect.. there must be no difference?

help please? xx

The same reason you pay £500 for a Louis Vuitton handbag that cost £30 to make - it's a brand thing.

If it's a plain ring I'd go with the cheaper option. I can't believe the prices of some rinmgs either, the type I want ranges from £300 to £1400 depending on where I get it!

It does also have to do with quality of metal and workmanship too, although I'm not saying you can't pick up a bargain, just be aware.... It could be do to with the amount of metal used (weight)

White gold will lose it's colour over time (and you tend to find the cheaper the ring, the quicker it loses it's colour) and need to be re-plated. You will pay around £30-£50 every time you need to have your ring re-plated (although Smooch do re-plate all of our rings for free, as many times as is needed), and this could be as often as every 6 months - 2 years.

Has your H2B thought about having a titanium ring? They are lightweight and hardwearing, and more to the point, good value for money! A 5mm gents titanium ring would probably cost around the same as a 9ct white gold ring, but would never need to be re-coated.

Hope that's helpful, I'll be around most of the day if you have any questions...

I have a smooch man coming over tonight to show me over 300 rings! (thanks to Laura for organising!)

Maybe you should do something similar, get different feels? That way he can feel different weights of different prices and you have a range of pretty things to stare at for the evening!

I'd be wary of quality and strenght. So more the depth of the metal not the width if that makes sense?

OHs dad's wedding ring was from Argos and he nearly lost his finger when it was crushed in an accident at work.

    You're welcome ?

Here's a couple of pictures if you want to show your H2B...

Titanium is slightly darker, but looks great. You can have either a matt brushed finish, or shiny polished finish...

I have a 9ct white gold ring that I've only had 4 years and it looks yellowy already.

I think if you were thinking getting 9ct for a wedding band it would be yellowing within a few years so you'd be looking at either a getting new one or getting it re-plated. It would be worth getting a higher quality one to save on it looking old and battered quickly and you then spending more to get it looking like new.

It is supposed to last for life, would you be happy in him getting a replacement from the one that you had with your vows?

He might not wear it now, but he may want to in 20 years when he is older and no longer body building?

In my opinion, (well OHs, who persuaded me) the ring is the only thing in the day which is going to remind you of your love forever and so it's the last thing which should be skimped on. I did think I could replace mine with a more expensive one later, but then I figured that its not going to be the same?

Dont want to offend you, but thought i'd mention this.
